"For deaf youth, summer camps bring opportunities to build relationships, develop their identities, and strengthen skills for the future. Whether they are day camps focused on coding, virtual programs in the arts, or overnight outdoor adventures, research shows that summer programs can have a significant, positive impact on the lives of deaf youth. Summer programs also contribute to a wide range of outcomes— such as isolation reduction—leading to improved social skills and opportunities to connect with deaf peers and role models. In an effort to increase summer camp opportunities, and to emphasize the importance of these programs, NDC has a collection of evidence-based resources, a series of videos, and a form that you can add to our list of camps for deaf students." 🌈 Today marks the beginning of International Week of Deaf People 2023, a chance to recognise and celebrate the deaf community. The week begins by raising awareness of the Declaration on the Rights of Deaf Children. There are more than 50,000 deaf children in the UK. Around 78% attend a mainstream school, where they may be the only deaf child. Deafness should not be a barrier to learning. Yet, on average, deaf children achieve a whole grade less than their peers in GCSEs. The attainment gap is wider for children who are both deaf and socioeconomically disadvantaged. What steps can we take to remove barriers to learning in our classrooms? ✅ Wherever possible, provide visual aids to help illustrate new concepts, broaden vocabulary, and give context to a situation. ✅ Remember to reduce background noise by closing doors and windows, turning off IT equipment, and using soft furnishings in the classroom. ✅ Ensure that deaf children have a “hearing buddy” who can offer support throughout the busy school day by repeating information they might have missed. ✅ And most importantly, build a trusting relationship with your pupils so that they feel comfortable expressing any concerns. For further advice and guidance on how to support deaf pupils, or children with any other speech, language and communication needs, get in touch with our SALT team: https://lnkd.in/evtu8gBz 🌟 Together, we can work towards a future that embraces diversity and inclusion for all.

Today, as we observe the "International Day of Education," it's a momentous opportunity to highlight a crucial resource that aligns with our mission at The European Union of the Deaf (EUD). We're proud to share our publication: “Implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD): An Analysis of the Legal Frameworks Governing Sign Language and Deaf Education in the EU”. This insightful book delves into the legislative intricacies of the UNCRPD, specifically focusing on the rights of deaf people. It provides a comprehensive analysis of how EU member states are implementing policies to uphold these rights, with a particular emphasis on indigenous sign language and equal access to education. You can download this publication for free on: https://lnkd.in/ePQ5zi68 #InternationalDayOfEducation #DeafEducation #SignLanguageRights #EUDPublication #InclusiveEducation

In honour of today’s theme “Putting Deaf People on the Agenda”, we call upon national governments, international institutions, research centres, and policymaking bodies to centre Deaf BSL users in their work. There is still a significant lack of data on Deaf people’s lives and less on the right to use national sign languages. Today we acknowledge the research done on BSL lives to date and call for more disaggregated data collection and monitoring of Deaf people and sign languages. Our policies are deeply co-produced with the UK's Deaf and BSL signing communities. We develop our policies through a long and intensive process of working with Deaf and signing academics at universities across the UK to ensure the latest Deaf-led research is incorporated, then we consult with Deaf and signing practitioners to gather and ensure recommendations are in line with their daily experiences in the workplace, and we check back with the wider Deaf and signing communities to ensure our overall policy aims and final policies closely adhere to the dreams, passions, and ambitions of the UK's Deaf community. "Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you will feed him for a lifetime." Thanks to David Pearson, my Ph.D. mentor, I learned how to better support students' development of independent reading skills by teaching them to be strategic. The article I am sharing is about the usefulness of the think aloud approach to teaching reading comprehension strategies: Salehomoum, M. (2023). Think-aloud: Effect on deaf adolescent students’ use of reading comprehension strategies. Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education, 28(1), pp. 99-114. https://lnkd.in/e_zpGuUV
