The phrase "thank you for your service" is a common expression in the United States, used to acknowledge and honor military veterans for their dedication and sacrifices. Its origins can be traced back to the post-Vietnam War era when the nation sought ways to express gratitude and recognize the contributions of service members. During the Vietnam War, many veterans returned to a country divided by the conflict, often facing indifference or hostility rather than appreciation. As the cultural and political climate evolved, there was a growing awareness of the need to honor and support those who had served in the military. The establishment of Veterans Day as a national holiday in 1954 and the construction of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in 1982 marked significant steps toward this recognition. The phrase "thank you for your service" gained prominence in the 1990s and early 2000s, particularly after the events of September 11, 2001, which reignited a sense of respect for the armed forces. It became a way for civilians to express their appreciation directly to veterans and active-duty military personnel. As a tool for gratefulness and validation, "thank you for your service" serves multiple important purposes. Firstly, it provides a simple yet powerful way to convey respect and acknowledgment. This acknowledgment can be profoundly meaningful for service members, offering a sense of appreciation that contrasts with the isolation and challenges they might face during and after their service. Secondly, it fosters a sense of national unity and collective responsibility. By expressing gratitude, individuals can contribute to a culture that values and supports its military personnel, reinforcing the importance of their role in protecting and upholding the nation's values and security. Lastly, the phrase can serve as a catalyst for broader conversations about veterans' needs and the sacrifices they make. It encourages the public to be more aware of and engaged with the issues affecting veterans, from mental health to employment, thus promoting a more supportive and inclusive society. "Thank you for your service" has evolved into a vital expression of gratitude and respect in the United States. It not only honors the individuals who serve but also strengthens the nation's collective recognition of their essential contributions, fostering a culture of appreciation and support. Other nations would do well to adopt similar practices, ensuring that their service members receive the recognition and respect they so highly deserve. #thankyouforyourservice #veterans #recognition #validation

In the military community, we each wear our service differently. My journey as a young female veteran may not mirror the classic narrative—shorter service, no deployment, not climbing ranks, and often, my contribution is overshadowed or dismissed. Yet, every act of service, no matter the scale, shares the same core of selflessness and commitment. You know I love #actionableadvice so here it goes... If you are a #veteran: 1. Speak Up and Get Louder 📣 Share your story. The more we vocalize our experiences, the more we normalize the diversity of military service. 2. Support Each Other 💯 Actively listen to and uplift fellow veterans' stories. Every story adds value and strength to the tapestry of our community. 3. Educate and Empower 💪 Use your voice to enlighten others. Highlight the importance of every role within the military, breaking down stereotypes and stigmas. Remember, comparing services diminishes our collective sacrifices. Let’s shift the focus to unity and respect for all contributions, large or small. Together, we can foster a community that honors every form of service and gives the world an example of the union we all crave. 🌌 #veteranshelpingveterans #communitybuilder #radicalresponsibility #empowerment

📣 In October 2023 we sponsored a Female Veterans Alliance (FVA) workshop which gave ex-servicewomen the opportunity to share insights into the multifaceted challenges they faced in the military. 📝 The commentary and recommendations from this workshop have now been published; 'Female Veterans: The forgotten and invisible servicewomen of our Armed Forces' - read it here: https://bit.ly/3VkZ8t4 The FVA is confident that this report will help organisations and policy makers understand more about the lived experiences of these women, and drive them to improve the support offered to serving and former personnel. ✍️ Based on key themes and concerns voiced by women within the report, we've published a series of blogs to offer some advice and guidance to this often forgotten and underrepresented community. 🔸 Female veterans and the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme https://bit.ly/43dxbFu 🔸 Financial awareness for successful transition from service to civilian life https://bit.ly/3TfxuLp 🔸 Understanding the Armed Forces Pension Scheme https://bit.ly/3Phg2oQ 🔸 Unveiling military sexual trauma https://bit.ly/4adkiO1 We look forward to continuing our collaborative work with FVA to further this agenda. #femaleveterans #militarytransition #veteransupport #inspireinclusion

As we celebrate this 4th of July, I reflect on my time in service and the countless brave individuals I had the privilege to serve alongside. Regardless of our branch or role, we shared a common purpose - to protect and serve our great nation. Today, I want to honor those who wore the uniform and those who supported us, including our families, friends, and communities. Those who provided support, who provided us with love, encouragement, and a sense of belonging, were our strength in the face of adversity. There are 2.1 million living women veterans in the U.S. and I am proud to say I am one of them… Between 2000 and 2023, the total percentage of women Veterans increased from 6.3% to 11.3%. By 2043, 2.2 million women are projected to make up 17.2% of all living Veterans. Fun Fact: In 2023, 35.7% of women Veterans resided in five states: Texas Florida California Virginia Georgia Whe. exiting military service, nearly two-thirds of women veterans describe their separation as “difficult” or “very difficult.” Many reportedthey were unprepared across many aspects of their transition. The Military Times identifies three key transition challenges that impact women veterans: 🫡 1. They feel they have become invisible when leaving the service and often do not self-identify as a veteran; 🫡 2. Military service in and of itself “de-feminizes” women, resulting in a variety of unexpected challenges associated with this deeply psychological transformation; 🫡 3. A stark lack of peer support post-transition is often noted by female veterans where they report not feeling accepted by civilian women and struggle with finding a group of peers in which they feel supported and encouraged. ❓What were some of the challenges in your military transition and how did you overcome them? #veterans #military #women
