The fireside chat between Kelsey Hightower and Kaspar Von Grünberg at the Platform Con 2024 was thoroughly fascinating. There were so many valuable nuggets of wisdom throughout this session. The one that stayed with me was Kelsey's nuanced position on the constantly trending "Cloud vs Data Center" topic. 🔹 Racking a system still involves the integration and configuration of several sub-systems like your hardware, network, storage etc. and the human capital needed to set this up and maintain it only gets more expensive over time. 🔹 Realistically it is getting more difficult to match the capabilities of a group of people spending $Bs focused solely on optimising infrastructure deployment, improving it's performance and making it more secure while on-premise IT budgets are still on a 5-year review cycle. 🔹 The number of cloud providers is going to increase manifold because a lot of the infrastructure design that GCP and Amazon were doing until now is becoming commodity. 🔹 Companies like Oxide Computer Company can today sell hyper-scaler like stacks to on-prem data center operators. It would become so easy to setup cloud-like infrastructure that cloud and on-premise would no longer be different things. This whole conversation is absolutely worth listening to -
