A study designed by the ALC on the quality of life for adults with FASD has just been published in the peer-reviewed journal, Disabilities. This ground-breaking study with nearly 400 participants, gathered anonymous survey data to reveal not only adversity in childhood, but continuing adverse experiences in adulthood. These continuing experiences are compounded by stigma and misunderstanding, serving as a barrier to supports. Read for more insight into the living experiences of adults with FASD as well as suggested areas for adult-specific supports and future areas of needed research. https://lnkd.in/eZaJRYfe

I am often asked if there is any evidence for working with the primitive reflexes. There are only a few articles within the AOTA but if you look outside this framework into other disciplines and the medical literature there is an ever growing body of evidence. Here is a recent article written by Dr Robert Melillo, published in the BMJ, on how primitive and postural reflex work with hemispheric stimulation can help individuals with Autism. It contains 3 case studies from a larger study. #primitivereflexes #shelleybirketteyles #hemispheresOT #functionalmedicine https://lnkd.in/ekQqXGRS

It is important to acknowledge the impact epilepsy has on the Black community. According to the CDC, 578,000 African Americans have epilepsy or a seizure disorder and more than 25,000 are diagnosed each year. They are more likely to be diagnosed than White Americans, have seizures that last longer than 5 minutes, and have a higher rate of SUDEP. However, they are also more likely to have their seizures controlled with medication. What is the disconnect? There are many external factors at hand. These include lack of access to an epilepsy center, biases in medical systems that cause members of the Black community to be less likely to seek care from doctors, and more. EFGC is here to provide support and create a better understanding of the challenges being faced by those in the Black community struggling with epilepsy. #BlackHistoryMonth

We are excited to share our latest publication in Child: Care, Health and Development! This scoping review explores the potential of exergames to enhance physical activity and physical literacy in adolescents with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) and Cerebral Palsy (CP). Despite promising results in other populations, the study highlights that the use of exergames to improve physical activity in DCD is rarely studied, revealing a gap in the literature in this area of research and calling for further studies in this area.
