Improving maternal, newborn and child health is a pressing issue in Nepal. Despite progress, critical issues in health care access and quality keep maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality rates high. The Baal Swasthya project, a collaboration of Corus organizations Lutheran World Relief and IMA World Health, is transforming health outcomes by reducing barriers and enhancing health services. Innovative components of the project include the E-MOTIVE intervention package and the non-pneumatic antishock garment (NASG) to address postpartum hemorrhage, a leading cause of maternal mortality. By partnering with the Nepal Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (NESOG), Baal Swasthya has strengthened the capacity of health care workers to implement the E-MOTIVE package and utilize the NASG in clinical settings. Learn more about how the project is making a difference and contributing to positive MNCH outcomes in Nepal here: https://bit.ly/3SjeNHb Pictured: Nurse Puspa Oli practices using the NASG during project training. #Nepal #HealthCare #HealthSystems #HealthSystemStrengthening #CapacityStrengthening #EMOTIVE #NASG #MaternalHealth #MaternalNewbornChildHealth #MNCH

Kenya's maternal and newborn health progress is undeniable, but the high maternal mortality rate remains a pressing concern. While 99% of women access antenatal care and 89% of deliveries are attended by skilled personnel, the national maternal mortality ratio of 355 per 100,000 live births is still too high. Early detection is key to reducing these preventable deaths. By leveraging point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), healthcare providers can provide early screening for potential complications, leading to timely interventions and improved outcomes. Let's work together to achieve Kenya's 2030 goals of reducing maternal mortality, stillbirths, and newborn deaths. #MaternalHealth #POCUS #SDG3

When it comes to improving the quality of maternal, neonatal and child health services in Ethiopia, measuring coverage alone isn't enough to assess impact. This study explores the actions needed to measure service access and service quality as one metric, and enhance coverage implementation in communities. #Ethiopia #MaternalHealth #GlobalHealth

Another important public health question. Congratulations to my entire team Dr Farah Niazi, Dr Karuna Nidhi Kaur, Mehwish Iqbal, Dr Mohd Shannawaz and Kalsang C.. The increase in Caesarean sections (CS) globally and specifically in the Indian subcontinent is a subject of interest in maternal healthcare, considering both the benefits and risks associated with the procedure. This study aims to assess the rate of CS in the Indian subcontinent, analyzing data from 10 articles encompassing 702,930 pregnant women aged 15–49 years. The findings show varying CS rates, with Bangladesh at 13.80%, India at 13.74% and Nepal at 4.60%. Factors, such as maternal age, education, place of birth and wealth quintile, were linked to these rates. The study also notes post-partum infection as a common complication associated with CS. The research focuses on three aspects: The prevalence and determinants of CS, the outcomes for mothers and neonates and the impact of CS on healthcare resources. It underscores the need for balanced antenatal counselling and informed decision-making to optimise the use of CS, considering both its necessity in certain cases and the associated healthcare implications.

The importance of addressing maternal health disparities goes beyond just access to healthcare. Dr. Bayo C. of Beyond Clinical Walls highlights the need to delve deeper into how care is delivered and the role of systemic racism and bias in treatment and policies. Understanding patients' lived experiences is key to providing equitable care. #HealthcareEquity #MaternalHealth #SystemicRacism

Nepal's investments in women and children yield 66% and 75%. What do these numbers mean? Maternal mortality #MMR was reduced by 66% (two-thirds) between 2000 and 2020-21 while neonatal mortality #NMR was reduced by 75%! How did they do this? #Nepal focused on strengthening its network of female #community health volunteers especially in rural areas, investing in health facilities and human resources, improving access to care by removing financial barriers through the Safe Motherhood programs, and scaling up access to critical reproductive health care. At this rate, Nepal will meet both the national #SustainableDevelopmentGoals #SDGs threshold for #MMR and the global target for neonatal mortality rate ahead of the 2030 target. On behalf of the Exemplars in Global Health program, I would like to extend my thanks to the South Asian Institute of Policy Analysis and Leadership (Nepal) and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London teams for their crucial contributions to this research, as well as colleagues from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population Nepal for their support 🙏.

Tackling maternal health disparities amidst the concerning surge in maternal mortality rates in the United States demands a comprehensive approach. With the country recording a high rate of 32.9 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2021, urgent action is imperative. This approach involves prioritising access to quality prenatal and postpartum care, particularly for marginalised communities and women of colour who face these disparities disproportionately. Addressing social determinants like income inequality, racial biases in healthcare, and geographical barriers is crucial. Additionally, investing in healthcare professionals' education and training to identify and manage pregnancy-related complications promptly is essential. Implementing comprehensive policies to address systemic inequalities and ensure equitable healthcare access can help mitigate these disparities and improve maternal outcomes nationwide.
