Like most in her in small village in Nepal, Suman Chaudhary (photo 1) was raised to believe a woman’s place is in the home. She was too shy to even speak to strangers, preferring household chores over public errands. But recently, she found herself at the forefront of a rescue effort when a neighbor became trapped by floodwaters. Several years ago, through Corus organization Lutheran World Relief, Suman became involved in the local Community Disaster Management Committee. These committees equip people in flood-prone areas to alert each other about rising waters, conduct search and rescue efforts, and protect their families, livestock and crops from dangerous floods. Another benefit of the committee is the substantial boost in confidence women have experienced through their participation. They are now significantly more involved in local leadership and aren't afraid to use their voices. Suman said she was the only person around when one of her neighbors, who had crossed the river to gather grass for her cattle, got caught in a flash flood. "I was afraid to be the one responsible for the rescue,” she recalls. However, she quickly remembered her training and took action to grab a rope and life preserver. "I called out for help, and a man who lived nearby came. Together we brought the woman to safety.” On World Drowning Prevention Day, Suman and fellow committee member Sita Chaudhary (photo 2) show some of the supplies they keep close by in case of flooding. #WorldDrowningPrevention #DisasterRiskReduction #DRR #Nepal #India #FloodPrevention #ClimateResilience

The floods in Kenya have led to widespread devastation, displacing families, and disrupting lives and livelihoods. As of 6 May 2024 more than 340,000 people have directly been impacted, and over 30,000 households displaced. Critical infrastructure, including schools, health centers, and sanitation facilities, has been submerged, leaving communities in desperate need. Over two-thirds of flood-affected counties in Kenya are grappling with high levels of food insecurity. The ongoing efforts of the Kenya Red Cross to support flood-affected people nationwide continue. Teams are stockpiling essential supplies, shelter kits and hygiene items. The IFRC emergency appeal launched last November to help those affected by the El Niño Enhanced Floods of 2023, will help scale up the Kenya Red Cross humanitarian response to the recent floods. All crises deserve our attention. I call for global support. http://bit.ly/3xXEk1h

As of 14 May 2024, the unprecedented floods in Kenya have directly affected more than 460,000 people, and displaced over 45,000 households. Access to essential resources like food, water, and medical care, particularly for children, has become increasingly challenging. Teams from @KenyaRedCross are working around the clock to provide life-saving aid to those in need. These heavy rains exacerbate the impacts of the October–December 2023 El Niño-induced floods, particularly in vulnerable areas. The IFRC has launched an emergency appeal to support the @KenyaRedCross response efforts. Urgent action is needed. https://bit.ly/3xXEk1h

#Somaliland has faced numerous challenges over the years, including recurring droughts, floods, and conflicts, which have severely impacted food security and nutrition. Displaced populations and rural communities are particularly vulnerable, struggling to maintain sustainable livelihoods due to recurring droughts, floods, and conflicts. To build the resilience of the affected communities, Acted is constructing 153,000 meters of contour swales/earthworks in Burao. The swales will harvest water by reducing run-off, allowing the water to soak deep into the soil to rehydrate the landscape, recharge groundwater, reduce soil erosion and ultimately increase crop production. This project is conducted, thanks to the French Embassy in Kenya and Somalia for the generous support. #ZeroPoverty #ZeroCarbon #ZeroExclusion

Ramawatar in #Nepal is showing me how we not only build #healthresilience at Corus International but #climateresilience too. Interlinked, let us always remember how #SBC goes beyond health, and now in times of #climatechange affecting #healthoutcomes, more than ever it is crucial to understand the linkages and be #proactive in our work. Flood resistant banana trees, who would have imagined? #Coruseffect
🌟 Meet Ramawatar🌟 Ramawatar is a farmer in eastern Nepal who faced immense challenges from the flooding that used to wash away his crops. He joined a Community Disaster Management Committee through Corus organization Lutheran World Relief’s Transboundary Flood Resilience project. It was there that he grew close with his neighbor, Jayantri, a fellow committee member who became a local leader on flood safety and climate-smart agriculture. Now, through support from Jayantri and the committee, Ramawatar is able to prepare for disaster risks and grow bananas that can withstand flooding. Right now, across southern Africa, millions of families are facing devastating famine as a result of prolonged severe drought, record-high temperatures, and widespread crop failures. In Malawi alone, 2 million households have been affected, with around 600,000 metric tons of food aid required to address the need, according to a statement by President Lazarus Chakwera who declared a state of disaster in March. As Malawi approaches harvest season, the need for aid is immediate. Farmers will be at the very end of last year's maize crop. If very little to nothing is harvested, then there will be no food for the next year. In partnership with a generous and anonymous donor, Design Outreach is providing disaster-relief aid in the form of food deliveries to families in the Balaka District in the southern region of Malawi, which has been significantly affected by the drought. In fact, just last week, more than 4,000 people representing 1,000 households gathered in Nyanyala, Malawi, to receive their food distribution. While they waited for the 30-ton truck to be unloaded, those gathered—including government officials, village chiefs, and police officers posted to provide security and ensure a safe and orderly process—heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ proclaimed. We are so thankful for this opportunity not only to provide for the physical needs of communities suffering from widespread drought and famine but also to share the good news of the Gospel to thousands of people in need of hope. #DesignOutreach #DisasterRelief #Malawi
