🚢 Friday the 13th: A Day of Superstition in the Maritime Industry 🌊 Happy Friday the 13th! While many consider this day to be unlucky, it’s particularly significant in the maritime industry. Historically, sailors have been known to be quite superstitious, and Friday the 13th is no exception. 🔍 Did you know? Sailing on Fridays: Traditionally, sailors avoided setting sail on Fridays, believing it to be an unlucky day. The Number 13: The number 13 has long been considered unlucky, and this extends to ships. Some vessels avoid having a 13th deck or even a 13th lifeboat. The Legend of HMS Friday: There’s a popular maritime legend about the British Navy commissioning a ship named HMS Friday to dispel the superstition. The ship was supposedly launched on a Friday, commanded by Captain James Friday, and set sail on its maiden voyage on Friday the 13th. Unfortunately, the ship was never seen again. Bananas on Board: Bananas were considered bad luck on ships. This superstition dates back to the 1700s when ships carrying bananas had to sail quickly to prevent the fruit from spoiling, leading to fewer fish being caught and more accidents. Whistling on Board: Whistling was believed to “whistle up a storm.” Sailors avoided whistling to prevent bad weather. Renaming a Ship: Changing the name of a ship was thought to bring bad luck unless a special de-naming ceremony was performed. Red Sky at Morning: The saying “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight; red sky in the morning, sailor’s warning” was used to predict the weather. A red sky in the morning was seen as a bad omen. Cats on Board: Cats were considered good luck on ships as they kept the rodent population in check and were believed to have magical powers to protect the ship. While these superstitions may seem quaint today, they remind us of the rich history and traditions that continue to shape the maritime industry. Whether you believe in the superstition or not, it’s fascinating to see how these beliefs have influenced maritime culture. Wishing everyone smooth sailing and good luck today! 🌟⚓ #FridayThe13th #MaritimeHistory #Superstition #ShippingIndustry #MaritimeTraditions

Hello LinkedIn friends, family, and acquaintances, today is NATIONAL MARITIME DAY - May 22! Each year on May 22nd, National Maritime Day recognizes the launch of the maritime industry in the United States. The celebration also honors America’s Merchant Marines for their contributions and sacrifices for our country. Special acknowledgment is given to ships and seafarers that have held a prominent place in our nation’s history. As one of the oldest industries, its time-honored traditions compose a full and rich history. Celebrations and ceremonies around the country recognize the people our maritime nation depends on. Each year the Department of Transportation holds a national ceremony in Washington D.C. at the Department of Transportation headquarters. While the holiday commemorates a transatlantic event, U.S. maritime industry encompasses nearly every state in the nation with workers transporting vessels on lakes, rivers, and oceans. Employment opportunities aren't limited to shipyards either. The maritime industry also calls for workers with expertise in fishing, aquaculture, processing, diving, and transportation, just to name a few. #NationalMaritimeDay #DallasHarrisTips+

What a transformation
The grandeur of the former Royal Arms Hotel in Gosport has been restored. 👏 Originally established in 1810, it became known as the ‘Submariners Pub’ in the 20th century as it was a regular haunt of submariners returning to Gosport after a tour of duty. As part of our High Street Heritage Action Zone in Gosport, Hampshire, we've restored the canopy and façade so that future generations can enjoy them. We protect and support local historic places that communities can be proud of. #HistoricHighStreets

#ICYMI, Navy Divers assigned to Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit One worked with the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) to recover the RTN corvette HTMS Sukhothai, which tragically sank in 180 feet of water in the Gulf of Thailand due to a storm in 2022. The #salvage team had four objectives: to search for the missing persons, to collect information in support of the RTN accident investigation, to demilitarize or remove sensitive equipment on-board and to recover culturally significant items to memorialize the tragic loss. The mission, performed as part of #ExerciseCobraGold2024, was the most advanced combined USN/RTN salvage event ever conducted. According to Lt. Cmdr. Max Cutchen, the U.S. Seventh Fleet Salvage Officer, “The combined diving on Sukhothai allowed us to capitalize on 30 years of bilateral #naval training in order to field a 100% interoperable team to attack technically complex, real-world objectives. I think this event opened all of our eyes to what we can accomplish when we work together.” #NavyDivers ability to conduct salvage operations keeps sea lanes clear, but allows us to contribute to important missions like this one. Read more about this somber, but impactful #partnership salvage mission at the link below. 👇 https://lnkd.in/gTrAKysx
