COSLA hosted the 2nd meeting of the Sport and Physical Activity Special Interest Group this week. Presentations from Public Health Scotland and sportscotland helped inform discussions and we were delighted to be joined by sportscotland's CEO, Forbes Dunlop.

We’re excited to launch the latest phase of our ‘Have a hmmm’ campaign this week, which encourages New Zealanders to stop and take a moment to assess the risks before getting stuck in at home, work and play. It’s estimated 90 per cent of all injuries are preventable. Research shows these injuries aren’t random or unpredictable – and we all have a part to play in stopping them. ACC accepts around two million injury claims each year – that’s more than 5,000 every day. And they have a big impact on the wellbeing of the people of Aotearoa. But by taking a moment to think, we can avoid injuries, keep doing the things we love and not harm those around us. Our research shows the campaign is so far having a measurable impact on changing public behaviours around risk, with significantly more New Zealanders now reporting they’re taking steps to prevent injuries to themselves (138 per cent increase) and to others (200 per cent increase) since April 2021. Responding to research insights, the new phase of ‘Have a hmmm’ encourages New Zealanders to think about how their own injury can cause flow on effects for workmates and their community. It also encourages people to speak up if they see the potential for harm, before it happens. You can watch our latest ‘Have a hmmm’ TV commercial below, and go to our website for more hints on thinking before you act to prevent injury 👉 https://acc.nz/3Ui25K6

"Last week, I had an incredible time presenting at the Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) Research to Practice Conference. It was a privilege to be invited to speak alongside esteemed colleagues. This was the first year the program hosted a topic dedicated to Occupational Rehabilitation, which is a huge testament to the collective efforts of our industry. Thanks to all who made this possible! #ESSAConference #OccupationalRehab #ExercisePhysiology"
Let's give another 'round of applause for one of our Directors, Joseph Squadrito! 👏 Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) recently invited him to share insights at their National conference. Joined by a mix of international and local experts, academics, and passionate professionals, Joseph delved into the Exercise Physiologist's Role in Compensable Psychological Injury. He shed light on the important role EPs play in empowering individuals navigating psychological injury within compensable schemes. Thanks for having us Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA). We love what you do!

Our sports med fellow, Ari Epstein, and I attended the yearly meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Chapter of the American College Of Sports Medicine (MARC-ACSM) Ari presented a complicated case of exertional heat stroke with subsequent HYPOthermia at an IRONMAN 70.3 Important discussion points included the failure of the rectal thermistor (not water resistant ) and the lack of an iSTAT due to CLIA problems For those who cover endurance / ultraendurance events: Do you have preferred brand of thermistor ? Have others had CLIA related restrictions for iSTAT use at sports events? Do we need to have legal clarification or advocacy for rule change on federal level ? Congrats Ari on a great discussion!

Election Day is coming in BC on October 19th and we need your vote! Over 815,000 British Columbians participate in amateur sport, but we haven’t seen an increase to core funding sport since 2010. Add your voice @SportBC’s campaign for health, connection and community and let’s work together to close the funding gap for sport. In addition to physical and other health and wellness benefits, participation in support also supports our province’s economic growth. In fact, some of these benefits include: ● Contributions to domestic and international #tourism (sport activirty drives $1.2B in GDP!) ● Creates job opportunities (there will be >9,200 job openings in sport by 2032) ● Improves employee productivity and reduces absenteeism Share Sport BC’s campaign and add your voice today: https://lnkd.in/g9GRcYkj #SportBC #PoweringSport

Yesterday I was privileged to spend a day in Middlesbrough and South Tees with Isac Mitchell and colleagues from You've Got This, one of Sport England's deepening places. Being relatively new to Sport England's work in Place, it was great to actually chat to partners and organisations working in the communities we invest in and understand what place based systemic work looks like in practice within South Tees. As I drove home, my head was spinning. Reflecting on the day and the conversations I'd heard, two things really stood out to me: 1. If we want to tackle inequalities at their root, the work which we do in communities and our local and national policy must account for the multiple ways inequalities manifest in people’s everyday lives - recognising the role which intersectionality plays, is key, in not only understanding inequalities in physical activity, but also wider inequalities, and creating solutions to overcome them. 2. There are passionate people right across our communities who are desperate for change and we need to ensure that 'we' build the capability and capacity, and the means by which communities, and those with lived experience can advocate for, influence and be involved in policy and decision making relating to their own spaces, places and communities. Despite my head spinning from the sheer complexity of working with complex challenges associated not only with physical activity, but also poverty, ill-health, education etc. which are manifesting in a Place, I'm really excited to continue to be involved in the wider Place work moving forwards. You can check out some of the resources which have been developed by our National Evaluation and Learning Partner (NELP) for evaluating complexity, here: https://lnkd.in/e28DrmyW

Great webinar on Sports Integrity Terminology. It was useful for me as a sports official as well as for my translation work. To the first question in the webinar, my true answer was "not yet". Thanks for the foundation on which to build my Glossary and the resources to build it.
It's a new year and a great time to learn about new things! I'll be giving a webinar about sports integrity terminology at 11:00 am London time tomorrow (January 9). The webinar is free to attend, you just need to register. Click this link to find out more! https://lnkd.in/e7nSaEXF

Truckee, Calif Stronghold of the L.S.E.D.&F.S. Dear Alpine club Sorry to have been so neglectful of this matter: my membership status. This must be the year for scandals lf all levels--- from Watergate to the Low Sierra Eating Dring & Farcing Society (LSED&FS). A recent security lock revealed that (the founding Director of the LSED&FS) had in a moment of moral weakness succumbed to pressure and joined the American Alpine Club--- this was a little over a year ago. The membership of the LSED&FS were stunned--- outraged--- rightfully so!** A High Council meeting was called --- I was called to answer for my incredible conduct. Cleverly following the example of the Watergate people, I freely admitted my sins, and for good measure threw in a plea of insanity. This satisfied the Council: I was give a chance to continue as Founding Director, provided I severed all connections with the hated American Alpine Club. I, of course, readily agreed to these Terms. This makes sense: as a true “Downward Bounder”, I have never (during my 1 years membership) felt comfortable in the company of the High Minded, Ethical gentlemen (who climb “without fanfare”, etc) who make up the AAC. Then, there’s the matter of all the wonder--- political in-fighting that seems to go on. Good enough comedy, I suppose--- but I wouldn’t pay anything to see it. The other AAC projects and functions are, no doubt, worthwhile--- to some one, but not for me. I find I just don’t really give a damn about any of this--- it’s entirely possible that I'm simply not “community minded”.
