Beneath the tranquil Marmara Sea, seismic forces sculpt the underwater landscape. Suspended sediment-laden currents surge, triggered by earthquakes. These turbidity currents intrigue scientists and can affect critical infrastructure like submarine cables and pipelines. Our recent application note reveals observations by the SeaGuard instrument—a multiparameter current meter stationed on Istanbul's seabed. Brace for mud flows, and unconventional currents as we explore underwater mysteries and their profound impact on the marine environment. Inside the Secretive World of Submarine Cable Repair Crews. The internet, vital for everything from banking to social media, relies on a vast network of undersea cables. These cables can break, and well, somebody has to fix them. Mitsuyoshi Hirai, chief engineer of the cable maintenance ship Ocean Link, recounts a harrowing experience during the aftermath of Japan’s 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Despite the dangers, Hirai and his crew understand the critical importance of their work, ensuring that the world stays connected. Find out how: https://lnkd.in/dxwnWWbh #OceanLink #InternetInfrastructure #GlobalConnectivity #CableMaintenance Photo: The crew of the Ocean Link in 2011 | Mitsuyoshi Hirai

Nice article on the impacts of the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake and tsunami, and the repair operations for submarine telecommunications cables, as well as a wider overview of other hazards and challenges facing cable repairs at sea. I contributed some inputs on natural hazards based on NERC: Natural Environment Research Council-funded research, as did several ICPC | International Cable Protection Committee members on several other topics. https://lnkd.in/d85B7TXG

🌊 Submarine Landslides: The Hidden Hazards Beneath the Waves 🌊 Submarine landslides are fascinating geological phenomena that occur beneath the ocean’s surface. These underwater events can have significant impacts on both the marine environment and human activities. In addition to natural factors such as weak geological layers, overpressure, earthquakes, stormwater loading, and hurricanes, human activities also play an important role in triggering submarine landslides. These activities include: - Erosion - Rapid Sedimentation - Cyclic Loading - Gas and Oil Extraction 📌 Understanding the interplay between natural processes and human-induced factors is crucial for assessing and mitigating the risks associated with submarine landslides. When a submarine landslide occurs, it can create waves on the ocean surface (tsunamis). These tsunamis can propagate over large distances and have varying effects along the coast, ranging from unnoticeable to extremely destructive. The impacts of submarine landslides and the triggered tsunamis threaten offshore installations such as oil platforms, pipelines, cables, and wind farms. These events can lead to the destruction of valuable land near shorelines. 📌 https://lnkd.in/dz8DUNNV #submarine_landslide #human_activities #tsunami

Keep an eye on the largest NW volcano Mt. Rainer 🌋 . The region was decimated by Covid19 and not prepared. Today the area lacks many levels of emergency communication infrastructure when the catastrophic event happens. What about power, water, food, transportation? How will civilians can communicate with first responders when the cell phone networks go down? https://lnkd.in/daeYV9U6
