I talk about photography & the art world. | Host of Subtext & Discourse Art World Podcast | Co-founder Jarvis Dooney Galerie
3 Reasons Why Portfolio Reviews are Essential for Fine Art Photographers to Grow Their Network & Get More Shows. 1. EXPANDING YOUR NETWORK Every industry is the same, who you know makes a big difference to your chances of success. Portfolio reviews give photographers the unique opportunity to speak with people who would otherwise be inaccessible. Though they can't promise you anything, simply having a meeting is something other industries rarely (if ever) provide. It's up to you to make a lasting impression. You have little to lose and lots to gain by presenting your work at a portfolio review. 2. RECEIVING CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK How often do you receive meaningful feedback to your work? Presenting your work on social media typically invites two kinds of feedback: "Oh I love this!" or "This is terrible, you should quit photography and sell all your cameras." Neither of which is helpful for your growth as an artist. Portfolio reviews provide the opportunity to get constructive feedback from industry professionals. 3. SECURING MORE SHOWS Where else can you find a room of curators, gallerists, publishers & other decision makers in the field? When else do you have the opportunity to spend a concentrated 20 minutes with someone who could change the course of your artistic career? If the timing is right, the meeting could turn into an exhibition, publication, or another such collaboration. Or it might not, but you've at least opened a dialogue. The more people you meet who are familiar with your work, the better your chances are of getting it exhibited. #networking #photography #artworld

📸 Calling all photographers and aspiring talents! 🌟 Here’s a little nugget of wisdom from the trenches of the photography world. 🎨 It’s all about transparency and honesty, especially when it comes to working with models. 💬 Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just dipping your toes into the industry, remember this: clear communication is key. 🗝️ If you’re on the hunt for models, don’t beat around the bush. 🌳 Be upfront about your intentions from the get-go. 💼 Whether it’s a paid gig or a collaboration, lay it out on the table. 📝 Don’t lure people in with false promises or vague statements. 🚫 Let’s ditch the “I need a model” charade and embrace the honesty of a true model call. 📢 It’s not just about finding the right face for your project; it’s about respecting the time and effort of the individuals you’re working with. ⏰ So, let’s make a pact to be straightforward and transparent in our communications. 🤝 Let’s build a community where trust and integrity reign supreme. 🌟 Together, we can elevate the photography industry one honest interaction at a time. 📸💫 #mffphotography #PhotographyTips #ModelCall #HonestyIsKey #TransparentCommunication

Public speaking coach for lawyers whose second language is English| Helping lawyers craft and deliver speeches and presentations with confidence to make a bigger impact and advance their careers| Writer and storyteller
It's World Photography Day. To celebrate, I'm posting this photograph. It brings back memories of dunking* light, fluffy, crispy churros into hot, thick, chocolate in this cafe in Valencia, Spain. It was such a memorable experience I remember the taste five years later. The harpist playing outside added to the memory. If you have a photograph that brings back a special memory, or that you're particularly proud of, post in the comments below. *dunking - if English isn't your first language, 'dunking' means 'dipping' #ESL #communicationskills #publicspeaking

Commercial Branding Photographer - Creating powerful stand-out photography for outstanding businesses. Helping businesses by creating a visual legacy, for those seeking professional photography.
To smile or not to smile, that is the question. I believe that in headshot photography you need to achieve a variety of expressions, for use in different places. Of course, a wide smile is friendly and approachable which is usually the best choice for a social media profile picture such as here on LinkedIn. However, for a CV or a pitch document it may be better to not beam. A photo can say so much about you. What do you think? #headshotphotography #londonbusiness

I once had a client who uttered these words. "Tams, I want to do a photoshoot and I'll be needing just one or two photos." These words are like a secret language in the photography world. A way of saying, "I want your service, but I don't want to spend on it." Deep down, I knew my client wanted more than just a couple of photos. Instead of letting my client go because one or two pictures isn't so profitable to me, I had an honest conversation with him. We discussed: 📍Their budget 📍Their plan for the shoot 📍How we can collaborate to bring their vision to life. During the discussion, I discovered he had the funds but wasn't willing to part with it. But I finally convinced him to. I explained to him what he stands to gain if we had a one hour photo session. So, here's a friendly piece of advice: If you run a business and your client or customer tries to "exploit" you, don't immediately turn them down. Explain to them what they stand to gain if they choose a full service option. Trust me, sometimes they don't know these things. Follow me Sweetie Tams and click the 🔔 so you never miss a post. What are the essential characteristics of a successful photographer? Compassion. If you can't feel your subject, how can you bring them to life in front of the camera. Extra passion for one thing in the frame. Something in that frame must have priority. You have to build the photo around something. Others over self. The photographer should never be the diva or the most important one on set. The photographer must rid themselves of ego or they won't hear the client's needs, the subjects' needs, or the ideas from crew about how to make the photo better. I have found that so many clients over the years choose the arrogant guy to be the photographer. They hand him the reins, and then ignore his abuse of his assistants. In my opinion, if the photographer is "that guy", you have limited your odds for magically making the end result better than the "shot list" made in the conference room. I'd love to hear other thoughts on this!

Photographer | MFA in Documentary Media | Visual Journalism Professor |🏅@WorldPressPhoto @POYI @Lange&TaylorPrize + others
As a visual storyteller and documentary photographer, I thoroughly research my subjects, whether it's an everyday aspect of life or a specific topic. This research shapes my initial vision, even if it rarely matches reality, it's an essential part of my process. On the field though, I find these insights from Swedish photographer Anders Petersen immensely valuable and important: “Photography isn't about intellectualizing or combining visual elements. It comes from the heart, driven by primal emotions and childlike wonder. Maintaining that curiosity is crucial because photos should be taken with fun—without it, there are no real photos. Photography is about people and our feelings towards ourselves. It's a journey of self-discovery, influenced by our interactions. I take two kinds of photos: one that reflects me and one that captures others. Through conversations and collaboration, we create meaningful images together.” #Photography #CreativeJourney #Documentary
