As we commemorate Women's History Month, it is fitting to spotlight remarkable women who defied societal norms of their time and shattered barriers in pursuing military ambitions. There is the story of the US Army soldier, Cathay Williams, the only known female Buffalo Soldier. Then there is U.S. Army Gen. Ann Dunwoody, the first female four-star general. And there is Chief Master Sgt. JoAnne Bass, the first female Chief Master Sergeant of the United States Air Force. Through their extraordinary stories, we glimpse not only the struggles faced by women in traditionally male-dominated fields but also the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity. But once we commemorate “the firsts,” where do we go from here? How do I, a senior leader build and continue the work for the future? Defender of the Republic I cannot recommend enough the fantastic biography of George C. Marshall, an inspiring leader, potential role model for nowadays junior and senior officers alike. My two main takes from this book, among many : 1/ Speak true to power 2/ Make it a lifelong attitude because it is not something you grow when you're on the flag officers list He noticeably enforced this rule as early as a major, in 1917, with general Pershing, and went on with president Roosevelt as a young brigadier. https://lnkd.in/ekCPMcVy

Today is launch day for Army 250. This is a citizen-led project I started to encourage communities, institutions, and individual Americans to engage with the story of the U.S. Army as we approach its 250th birthday in 2025. Every week we'll be sharing a newsletter that lifts up different dimensions in how the Army has influenced American life and society. This will include military campaigns and stories of American soldiers throughout our history, but it will also look at the connections between the Army and facets of American life seemingly far removed from the battlefield: food, fashion, music, literature, religion, business, civil society, and so many other domains have Army stories. This makes the Army's story relevant and personal for all Americans, irrespective of one's direct connection to the service. The research is part of my work to complete a graduate degree with the Murray State University Department of Organizational Communication and Leadership. As someone who has held a leadership position, you can provide valuable insights about volunteering with the military and how those leader roles are developed and communicated. The interview will take 45 to 60 minutes and will be scheduled at your convenience. If needed, a follow-up interview may be conducted to clarify information. It is important to gather your perspective. Your responses, however, will be kept confidential. Each participant will be assigned a pseudonym to keep personal identifiers private during the analysis and writing of the research. Volunteers nationwide contribute thousands of hours of valuable labor and services to communities, including the military. Your participation can add to a growing body research that may improve insight into volunteer development. The #BestArmor and #BestBuddy of a soldier In the unforgiving realm of military duty, where every day is a test of endurance and will, there lies an indispensable asset far greater than the sharpest sword or the most precise strategy. It is humor—the finest and most resilient companion a soldier can possess. And I dare say, not just any humor, but the ability to find humor in our own actions, our own shortcomings, and even in the solemn weight of our responsibilities. This, my dear comrades, is the mark of true strength and character. Recently, I shared a post on BPET https://lnkd.in/gnCnviU2 a subject as mundane as morning drills, yet it sparked few reactions that accused the author of showing officers in a poor light, of misjudging the forum, and of undermining the justified perks of a soldier. Yet,unbowed. For an officer who can critically examine his own faults, who can chuckle at his own follies, is worth his weight in gold. Let us not forget that physical prowess, though vital, is merely the beginning. Soldiers from every corner of our land share similar capacities, molded by the geography and demography of their birth. But it is the attitude—the soldiering spirit—that sets one apart from the other. And in that attitude, humor reigns supreme. It is not merely a release valve for pressure; it is a signpost of resilience, a beacon of self-awareness, and a shield against the harshest blows of fate. Let those who fail to understand this glimpse into our world know that humor is no sign of weakness but a badge of courage. A soldier who can laugh at himself will never be defeated by the world. So, let us wear our humor with pride, for it is more precious than the wittiest colleague, and more enduring than the hardest steel. In the end, the soldier who can smile at his own imperfections stands taller than those who can only critique from afar. Heritage, stewardship and Masters of the Air. Do you know your company’s history? Do you know why your company does what it does? I’m an Iraq veteran and don’t watch Iraq, Afghanistan or contemporary war movies. I just don’t. But WW2? Army Air Force? Let’s goooooooo!!!!!! So I was watching Masters of the Air and had quite a reaction as I watched the crews do their “pregame” rituals, mass mission briefing, and ride to the B17. It’s the same ritual we went through in 2003 as they did in 1943. Surreal. Then I thought about company partnerships, legacy contracts and current practices. All part of my company’s history. Imagine getting out of the #military in 2010 and being told by a male counterpart (shipmate) that you would be NOTHING without the military so just stay. I declined. You see, when I set my mind on something, nothing any physical person can say will deter my thoughts and actions. I have always believed I would be successful after leaving the uniform because the military provided me such a great platform and start to being organized, functional through chaotic times and assertive. Tell me that isn't a combination for success! This is what I want to instill in other #womenveterans. Creating successful lives through their careers even when no one else believes they are capable of doing so. Whether I complete this one-on-one or in a small or large group setting, my goal is to empower each woman veteran beyond the negative comments and phases of uncertainty.
