Wonders Of Nature: Monkey orchid, or *Dracula Simia* They are interesting plants from Ecuador and Peru, known for their flowers that resemble monkey faces. They live in humid forests at altitudes of 1000 to 2000 meters and grow on trees without parasites, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air. Their flowers emit a ripe citrus scent, attracting pollinators. Although difficult to grow outside their habitat due to high humidity and temperature demands, they are highly prized by collectors. This orchid is an impressive example of nature's diversity, standing out for its unique appearance and unique aroma. They are also perfect examples of paradoxes in nature.

PALO SANTO: This Spiritual Wood Is All About Good Vibes Let’s talk about palo santo, the holy wood. What is it? How is it harvested? How do you use it? What is Palo Santo? The palo santo tree, known botanically as bursera graveolens is native to Ecuador, Peru, Guatemala, and other coastal regions of South and Central America. Wood from the palo santo tree can be complicated to process in its wild natural state. That’s because the tree needs to die naturally – usually after 70 years or so – with its wood left on the ground for several more years to age in order to produce the best quality oils. This lengthy process has tempted unscrupulous middlemen and others to prematurely harvest younger trees. Shady players have also marketed a synthetic form of the plant — along with its characteristically warm sweet scent — to unsuspecting consumers. Benefits and Uses of Palo Santo For centuries, indigenous tribes in South and Central America have burned palo santo wood in ceremonies. Its aromatic smoke is reputed to clear a space of negative energy when used in smudging and is considered as a “sister” to sage in spiritual clearing. Reported benefits of palo santo include: Neutralizing bad energy from your personal spaces including home and office Relieving stress, anxiety, and depression Lifting the mood Anti-inflammatory Aroma-therapy Massage work (using palo santo oil) Natural alternative to insect repellent Ethical considerations for palo santo Thanks to the demand for palo santo and the numerous properties attributed to it, sellers can’t seem to keep enough in stock. While the bursera graveolens variety of the plant is not currently endangered, some irresponsible harvesting practices by greedy middlemen may be putting the future of the plant at risk. To add to the confusion, there is another related species that goes by the same name but whose botanical name is bulnesia sarmientoi.  This species is used in making essential oils and furniture and it is indeed endangered. Tree spotlight: Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba). Native to China, Ginkgos are a non-native, non-invasive tree from Asia. It grows in various sun and soil conditions and is highly resistant to pests and diseases, making the tree an urban tolerant species that can reach 15 metres in height in Toronto. A #Treevia fact is that it's also known as a "living fossil". Ginkgos are part of an ancient group of trees with fossil records dating back millions of years, where the leaf has remained virtually unchanged! The fan-shaped foliage may be one whole leaf, or lobed with a split in the middle, hence the Latin name, "Ginkgo biloba", meaning "two lobes". The alternate leaves grow from the tip of spurs, which are like nubs shooting out from the twig. The Beauty of A Rainbow I recently read about a tree called a rainbow eucalyptus (Eucalyptus deglupta), also known as Mindanao gum or rainbow gum, it thrives in the biodiverse rainforests of the Philippines, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea Standing 197–246 ft tall, the rainbow eucalyptus is a spectacle of nature with its smooth, orange-tinted bark that peels away in strips to reveal a canvas of green, red, orange, gray, and purplish brown hues. As the tree grows, its outer bark delicately peels to reveal the inner bark, which starts out in pastel green and deepens into orange, red, pastel blue, and sunset pink hues. These multicolor streaks set the Eucalyptus Tree apart. The shedding process reveals new colors and patterns, uniquely marking each tree. This color change and its towering height make it a beautiful sight. But its purpose isn’t beauty alone, its leaves are antiseptic and are used to treat various ailments, such as wounds, and in teas to treat asthma and coughs. The tree’s ability to repel mosquitoes adds to its valued role in improving life quality, demonstrating its practical uses beyond its environmental contributions. So why am I so intrigued by these trees? It occurred to me that as they grow they shed their bark much like when we grow we often shed things that no longer suit our life. I think on all the internal workings of these trees that create the process of growth and renewal and I am reminded of how God wants to bring growth and renewal to my heart. I am captured by the fact that this growth causes the bark to shred in strips and because of that new wood is revealed. This stripping process is what reveals the beauty and these trees just like God’s refining process for us reveals more of Him in and through us. I also note that each tree is marked uniquely by this process much as we are all unique. I am also reminded how God used a rainbow as a symbol of His covenant with Noah and I think back on His promises to me and I rejoice that He is faithful to complete all that He has promised.
