On the morning of 27 January 1945, at Auschwitz-Birkenau, only about 7,000 prisoners were still alive, while more than a million people had perished there. It is estimated that six million Jews were exterminated in the death camps. Ida Grinspan (1929-2018) was one of the survivors of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camps. The Holocaust was one of the reasons why the Council of Europe was set up in 1949, just four years after the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The aim was to prevent such a genocide happening again in Europe, and to ensure that human life and human rights would be respected, no matter what the person’s nationality, ethnicity, race, religion or sexual orientation. #WeRemember #NeverAgain #HolocaustRemembranceDay

Not only during the holocaust was numbering instead of names used. During the Holodomor Genocide, orphan children that were brought into Russia by the Soviet and put into their hellhole. orphanages were given numbers to encourage them to forget their names and family and ethnic heritage.
