On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce to the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state, that they were free by executive decree. 🇺🇸 Happy Flag Day! 🇺🇸 Today, we celebrate Flag Day, a special day to honor the symbol of our nation's unity and freedom—the American flag. 🌟 Civics Lesson of the Day: Flag Etiquette and Lesser-Known Facts The American flag, also known as "Old Glory," represents the values and history of our country. Here are some lesser-known facts and important etiquette about our flag: Lesser-Known Facts: 1. Flag Code: The United States Flag Code, established in 1923, provides guidelines on how to display and handle the flag. It’s a set of rules to ensure the flag is treated with the respect it deserves. 2. Never at Half-Mast by Mistake: The flag is only flown at half-mast by specific orders, usually by the President or a state governor, to honor and remember the sacrifices of our nation's heroes. 3. No Flag Higher: When displayed with other flags, the American flag should always be at the highest point or to the flag's own right (the observer’s left). 4. Proper Disposal: When a flag is worn and no longer fit for display, it should be retired in a respectful manner, typically by burning in a dignified ceremony. Did You Know? 1. Folding the Flag: There is a specific way to fold the American flag into a triangular shape, which symbolizes the hats worn by colonial soldiers during the American Revolution. 2. National Anthem Connection: The Star-Spangled Banner, written by Francis Scott Key, was inspired by the sight of the American flag flying over Fort McHenry after a battle during the War of 1812. As we celebrate Independence Day, I find myself drawn to one of the most poignant portrayals of American history: "The Patriot." This film not only entertains but also underscores crucial themes that resonate deeply today. Set during the American Revolutionary War, "The Patriot" vividly depicts the struggle for freedom and the pivotal role of armed citizens in securing independence. Mel Gibson's character, Benjamin Martin, exemplifies the bravery and determination of early American fighters who defended their liberties against tyranny. The movie powerfully illustrates how a well-armed populace can serve as a fortification against oppression and safeguard individual freedoms. It reminds us of the fundamental right enshrined in the Second Amendment: the right to keep and bear arms, crucial not just for personal defense but also as a check against potential abuses of power. In today's world, discussions around gun rights and the Second Amendment remain contentious and complex. Yet, "The Patriot" serves as a reminder of the historical context that shaped these constitutional freedoms. It prompts us to reflect on the responsibilities that accompany such rights and the enduring principles of self-defense and civic duty. This Independence Day, let's honor the sacrifices of those who fought for our freedom and the enduring values that continue to define our nation. I know you want to see the end of white supremacy. We do, too.   I am curious. How do we envision the end? Let’s think about it. After all, somebody should. Will colorblindness prevail and we will all be equal and in equitable relationship? Or will our national civil war, now a cold one, progressively become hotter until a final conflagration settles it all? (Please let us win that one.) Or maybe the browning of America will deliver the end of white supremacy when the white populace shrinks below a numerical majority in our democratic nation. All these currents are at play in our present time.   We believe that building anti-racist multiracial community offers a path to restructuring the relationship of race in our lives in this country. And we believe that multiracial communities need to stand on the two pillars of justice and relationship.   That’s all you really need to know before coming to the conference.
