Despite significant investments in the earn-and-learn model through federal agencies and key legislation, Multiverse—a leading UK #apprenticeship provider—paused its U.S. registered apprenticeship programs. This raises the question: Is our apprenticeship system too rigid and costly? In the latest Work Shift op-ed, JFF’s Vanessa Bennett highlights the need for increasing public funding, refining success metrics, and streamlining administrative requirements to help ensure that the promise of apprenticeships is fully realized by all employers and workers. Great article! Love this point: “Funding tends to favor high outcome numbers which can limit access for small and micro employers who may only be able to train a couple apprentices at a time.” For where we are in our efforts to scale apprenticeships, it’s important that we continue to think with constructive criticism and really look at what the data is telling us about our efforts. The number of apprenticeships should not be our only bar.

What a fantastic update for businesses and apprenticeships! Today the PM announced that the government will now be fully funding apprenticeship programmes for anyone 21 and under working in non-levy settings. This is a great opportunity for young learners to gain valuable skills, and businesses to gain experienced staff, without the financial burden. 🙌 But that's not all! Levy companies can now transfer up to 50% of their unused levy pot to support other non-levy employers, making courses for their 21+ learners cost-free. 🎉 These changes will not only support small businesses but also encourage more work-based learning and development. Who doesn't want to take advantage of that?💡 Reach out to find out how Paragon Skills can help you to invest in your future workforce. 👩🎓 #apprenticeships #levytransfer #supportsmallbusiness

Workforce development reform at the federal level is long overdue. It's encouraging to see discussions and thought leadership emerging around making federally funded programs more flexible and responsive to both employers and job seekers. This shift could significantly improve the effectiveness of our workforce initiatives, better aligning skills with market demands and helping more people find meaningful employment. Looking forward to seeing concrete steps towards implementing these much-needed changes.

We are pleased to see the government's commitment to supporting small businesses and boosting apprenticeships. The measures outlined by the Prime Minister show a positive step towards creating more opportunities for young people to kick-start their careers and for businesses to access the talent they need to grow. Here are the highlights: 💡 SMEs will receive full funding for apprentices under 21 reducing costs by removing the need for co-investment 💡 Employers paying the apprenticeship levy can now pass on a higher amount to other businesses, from 25% to 50% - helping SMEs hire more apprentices The measures are expected to enable up to 20,000 more apprenticeships. We are encouraged by the government's effort to provide more support for small businesses and young people, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact they will have on apprenticeships across the country. EMA Training Ltd Regional Director (Apprenticeships & Training) | Bodie Hodges Foundation Chair Trustee
CHANGES ON THE HORIZON TO THE UK APPRENTICESHIP SYSTEM ... ➡ NEW GROWTH AND SKILLS LEVY (TO REPLACE EXISTING APPRENTICESHIP LEVY): The changes to the levy will allow funding for shorter apprenticeships and further 'foundation' level apprenticeships. ➡ LEVEL 7 APPRENTICESHIPS (MASTER'S DEGREE EQUIVALENT) TO REQUIRE FUNDING OUTSIDE THE LEVY: With the focus on boosting the opportunities for young people to enter the professional world, 'level 7 apprenticeships' are likely to need funding outside of the apprenticeship levy. 🎙 The first report by Skills England (the Government's new body for the skills system) was also launched yesterday, showing that training expenditure is at its lowest level since records begin in 2011 - highlighting the need for the changes to the system. Ultimately, as ambassadors of our young professionals, we see this as a positive step forward to encourage employers to support and recruit the next generation. Let's hope the 'detail' is soon to follow!! FYI: for any business owner who hasn't come across the terminology 'apprenticeship levy' before (it was all new to me, a few months ago, too!) - the 'levy' is only applicable to businesses who have an annual wage bill of £3 million +.
