Paris budgeted about $8 billion for the 2024 Olympics when it won its bid in 2017. The city has since upped its budget by several billion dollars. But if the final cost stays in that ballpark, Paris will host the cheapest Summer Games in decades.

The Paris Olympics may have just ended, but in Los Angeles, preparations for the next Games are already well underway. City officials hope the event will be a moneymaker, like the last L.A. Olympics in 1984; skeptics caution that the Games often go wildly over budget, as with Tokyo in 2021 and Rio in 2016. Los Angeles is spending big to expand its rail system, overhaul its airport, and revitalize its convention center for 2028 — all pricey propositions. The city won't build an Olympic Village, though, saving billions by putting up athletes at U.C.L.A. dorms. The L.A. Games will use existing structures including the Coliseum and the Rose Bowl for events, in a bid to save cash. It's becoming more and more expensive to host the Olympics, experts say: In fact, the Paris Games are the first since Sydney in 2000 to come in under $10 billion total cost. The Paris Olympics were a massive success for NBCUniversal, with streaming viewership minutes quadrupling from the 2021 Tokyo Games.

Paris Olympics: A Budgetary Masterclass The Paris Olympics is turning heads, but not just for the athletic feats!🏆 It's remarkable how this event has managed to stay remarkably close to its initial budget. In an era where mega-projects often spiral out of control, this is a testament to exceptional financial planning and execution. S&P Global Ratings estimates that spending for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris will not exceed $10 billion, or roughly deviate by 25% from the original budget. The research noted that, in comparison, the 2020 Games in Tokyo and the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro had budgets that were over 350% and 280%, respectively, overrun. Who says big events can't be managed responsibly? Paris 2024 is proving that with the right strategies, it's possible to deliver a world-class event without breaking the bank. #ParisOlympics #Budgeting #SportsBusiness #Paris2024

While it's always fun and entertaining to see the world's greatest athletes converge in one city to compete and bring national pride, it's also interesting to see how cities/countries are becoming more reluctant to host global competitions. Even though the amount of revenue a global event could rake is appealing, it seems that host cities so often underestimate the expenditures, from bidding through completion: 2012's London events went over 75% the budget, while 2016's Rio events needed a $900 million bailout from the government. Qatar faced human rights controversies constructing their stadiums just to ensure they could accommodate competitions and fans visiting. It's no wonder 2023's FIBA and the upcoming 2026's FIFA World Cup preferred to have three countries to host simultaneously with Japan/Indonesia/Philippines and USA/Mexico/Canada respectively. #Olympics #WorldCup #GlobalCompetition #Economy #RevenueVsCosts

With this year's Olympic Games approaching the starting block, we look at how the numbers stack up. As events go, there’s none bigger than the Olympic Games. It attracts the most participants, the biggest audiences and, of course, the highest price tag. Paris 2024 in July will be no different. Organisers expect 300,000 people to line the banks of the river Seine to watch the opening ceremony – 10,500 athletes will compete and 20,000 businesses registered to tender for games contracts. For 17 days it will take over the French capital and the world of sports, attracting a potential worldwide audience of four billion viewers. Final figures for the Paris Games are yet to be realised, but estimates are that it’ll cost US$9.6 billion. Click here to read more: https://lnkd.in/ezefS6uX

Hosting the Olympics costs billions, and there’s tons of evidence that suggests that cities lose tons of money over the Games. Will Paris 2024 be different? The newly constructed Olympic Village in Seine-Saint-Denis, on the outskirts of Paris, was built in part by private investors, in a development model that has become common for host cities. When the Games are over, some of the dormitories will be converted into affordable housing. Read more in this unlocked article from the The New York Times. https://lnkd.in/eqchM9Yc
