The process for undocumented immigrants to obtain legal status is long and arduous. In fact, it can be so long that by the times the parents qualify for it, their kids are adults and therefore no longer qualify as their dependents. Stephanie, Solicitor: Social justice means providing access to justice for everyone. Scottish Legal Aid allows us to assist all of our clients. Naz, Accounts: I am bilingual and I help provide access to justice by assisting clients who have a language barrier. Kirsten, Trainee Solicitor: Social justice can be achieved by advocating for our clients in our everyday work, by fighting against inequality, discrimination and exclusion. Alan, Kurdish Interpreter: We are often the first point of contact for clients coming from troubled backgrounds. It is important that we help them understand the legal system.

2/9: Virginia Budget Bill- “The Department of Social Services shall…comply with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by ensuring that meaningful access to federally-funded programs, activities and services administered by the Department is provided to limited English proficient (LEP) persons, 63 Fed. Reg. 47,311-47,323 (August 8, 2003). At a minimum, the Department shall (i) identify the need for language assistance by analyzing the following factors: (1) the number or proportion of LEP persons in the eligible service population, (2) the frequency of contact with such persons, (3) the nature and importance of the program, activity or service, and (4) the costs of providing language assistance and resources available; (ii) translate vital documents into the language of each frequently encountered LEP group eligible to be served; (iii) provide accurate and timely oral interpreter services; and (iv) develop an effective implementation plan to address the identified needs of the LEP populations served.”

Grant Opportunity: Safe and Diverse Communities Grants Program Open now; Closes 15/03/24; up to $150,000; Qld The program supports targeted, community-led projects to increase the capability of multicultural communities to recognise, respond and prevent sexual, domestic and family violence across Queensland. It is for culturally and linguistically diverse communities. There are two streams: -Small grants up to $25,000 to: recognise, respond to and raise awareness of DFV, and provide better support for victim-survivors of DFV. -Larger grants up to $150,000 to: drive cultural change in enhancing response to, prevention, awareness and recognition of, and/or support for those impacted by DFV, and contribute to sustained community impact beyond the grant's expiration, which must involve the development of training programs/resources/materials tailored to address the identified priority issue/s. Eligibility: Applicants must: -be a not-for-profit, legal entity, or -be a local government entity, or -have an auspice agreement with any of the above entities. -be established in Queensland and currently operational in Queensland.
Today we’ve launched the 2023-24 round of the Safe and Diverse Communities Grants Program. One-off grants are available to support women’s safety and violence prevention initiatives in Queensland’s culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Small grants of up to $25,000 and larger grants of up to $150,000 will be awarded to successful applicants, with a maximum of three larger grants available in total across Queensland.
