Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving technique used in emergencies when someone's heartbeat or breathing has stopped. It involves chest compressions combined with artificial ventilation to manually preserve brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing. Here's a brief overview of the CPR steps for adults: 1. Check Responsiveness and Breathing: - Ensure the scene is safe. - Tap the person and shout to see if they respond. - Check for normal breathing for no more than 10 seconds. 2. Call for Help: - If the person is unresponsive and not breathing, call emergency services immediately. - If possible, send someone else to call for help and get an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). 3. Begin Chest Compressions: - Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest, then place your other hand on top. - Interlock your fingers and keep your arms straight. - Push hard and fast, at least 2 inches deep and at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. 4. Give Rescue Breaths (if trained): - After 30 compressions, open the airway by tilting the head back and lifting the chin. - Pinch the nose shut, make a seal over their mouth with yours, and give 2 breaths. - Each breath should last about 1 second and make the chest rise. 5. Continue CPR: - Keep alternating 30 compressions with 2 breaths until emergency help arrives, the person shows signs of life, or an AED is ready to use. Using an AED: - Turn it on and follow the prompts. - Attach the pads to the person's chest as shown in the AED's diagram. - Ensure no one is touching the person when the AED is analyzing the heart rhythm and delivering a shock if needed. Proper training is crucial for performing CPR effectively, so consider taking a certified CPR course to get hands-on practice.
