The annual California State Association of Counties® (CSAC) Institute is now in session, and we are proud to announce the County of Tulare’s representatives for this prestigious leadership program. Over the next several months, these dedicated professionals will participate in dynamic and interactive courses led by highly qualified government leaders, honing their skills to better serve our community alongside representatives from Fresno, Madera, and Kings counties. The program began with its first session, “Leadership Fundamentals and Public Service Values,” hosted at Fresno County’s Department of Social Services - Hope Center. Participants were welcomed by Fresno County Administrative Officer Paul Nerland and CSAC Foundation COO Paul Danczyk, PhD. This year’s cohort embarks on a journey to strengthen leadership capacity through the CSAC William “Bill” Chiat Institute for Excellence in County Government, a cornerstone of professional development for county officials across California. Tulare County is proud of its history with the CSAC Institute. Many of our staff, including County Administrative Officer Jason Britt, are CSAC alumni who continue to contribute to the development of leaders statewide. We are excited to support this year’s cohort of outstanding Tulare County representatives as they embark on this transformative experience. We look forward to the innovative ideas and enhanced leadership skills they will bring back to their teams and agencies. How can governance evolve to better serve schools and communities? In our new discussion paper, we dive into why trust governance must shift focus—from prioritising compliance to embracing forward strategy. Drawing insights from our daily work with trusts, we highlight how a stronger, strategic approach to governance can unlock the full potential of schools working together, engaging diverse voices to build a legacy that outlasts any one leader. Trusts are powerful engines for collective impact. But without aligned governance, efforts can fragment, and that common purpose is at risk. Next-gen governance explores how building a resilient governance culture will be essential in a sector where governance vacancies are high and leadership succession is critical. Learn how thoughtful, future-focused governance can ensure schools are empowered to serve their communities with a clear vision and shared values. Download the paper: https://lnkd.in/enw49g5m

On-point NY Times op-ed from Darren Walker, President of the Ford Foundation. A few excerpts below.... "There has never been a more difficult time to lead anything — whether a publicly traded corporation or a nonprofit nongovernmental organization; whether a global university or a local, public school or classroom." "Leadership is an action, not a title. And many of our leaders are paralyzed by broken, perverse incentives that impair their abilities to fulfill institutional missions and mandates. Paradoxically, many leaders feel that any reduction in their visibility brings with it a promise of reward. "Increasingly, I worry that well-intentioned boards of directors are selecting rising leaders for safety, appointing executives who have assiduously avoided controversy rather than those most adept at managing it. Then, they counsel toward caution, not conscience." "We need leaders who manifest a moral capacity to embrace the nuance and complexity to which we’ve become allergic, come what may — to take a stand for progress, even if incremental or imperfect." Amen. https://lnkd.in/ewxyD5ER

In the work of service, leadership isn’t about titles or power; it’s about making a positive impact, fostering collaboration, and creating an environment where everyone can thrive. Speaking of leadership, if you work in public or charter schools in Texas, have you connected with the Association for Compensatory Educators of Texas (ACET)? There’s no better time than now to join a network of great leaders across Texas who are making a significant impact through compliance, policy, funding, and much more. We at UCD Smurfit Executive Development were delighted to host Ronan O’Gara in partnership with Boyden Ireland on Tuesday, 8th October. This second annual Boyden Ireland Assembly—an exclusive annual event that connects international leaders with Ireland's C-suite executives and NEDs. Professor Joe Peppard, who interviewed Ronan, emphasised the importance of reframing executive education, highlighting curiosity, a growth mindset, and the drive to push boundaries and learn new things. “Ronan is a distinguished leader who has overcome countless obstacles, through difficult transitions, both on and off the field,” explained Tim Wray, Director of UCD Smurfit Executive Development. Ronan O’Gara shared his perspective on leadership, stressing the significance of genuine connections, caring, and building trust. He also discussed the dual role of a head coach in managing both staff and players to achieve excellence. “When people are engaged and when people are aligned and want the best for each other, that creates a good environment,” said O’Gara. “You have to get to know them and understand what makes them tick to get the best out of them. Before you get the player, you have to get the person. Get the person, and hone the player.” Please click on link below to see the full press release: https://lnkd.in/eGGF44FS For our portfolio of courses please see link below: https://lnkd.in/eDvtRnUv For all enquiries please contact us on: exec.dev@ucd.ie James Bannigan Tim Wray Joe Peppard Avril Mannion Patrick Murray Make-A-Wish Ireland Boyden Svetlana Malceva Laoise L. Today we kick off the first of our programs as part of the Mayors Institute and we are so proud to get this empowering initiative off the ground. The Mayors Institute has commenced with the inaugural Mayors & Deputy Mayors Mandatory Training run by the Municipal Association of Victoria to enable Mayors and Deputy Mayors to complete their prescribed training under the Local Government Act, Amendment Act (Governance and Integrity) 2024 and the Regulations. Tonight I have the privilege of hosting our first Mayors Institute Networking Event, where we will come together with Mayors, Deputy Mayors and CEOs to hear from the Hon. Prof John Thwaites AM and to learn from each other as we commence the new term of council across Victoria. The Mayors Institute offers an immersive, high-impact experience for Victorian Mayors equipping them with the skills to navigate complex challenges and lead with purpose, integrity and impact. As anyone in local government leadership will tell you, it’s not a solo endeavour. To lead with confidence and serve your community’s needs, collaboration is essential. The Mayors Institute brings together Mayors from councils right across Victoria to share knowledge, grow, and pool their collective strengths. Peer-to-peer learning and collaboration is the foundation for what we hope is more than just a training program but a space for transformation and connection. Through a series of bespoke sessions and lively workshops, our elected leaders gain practical insights into governance, leadership, and advocacy, and how to adopt innovative approaches to policy and practice that can leave a lasting impact. But I think the most valuable element of the Mayors Institute will be the meaningful relationships formed and the conversations shared, as leaders work together to find solutions for common challenges. At the Municipal Association of Victoria we stand with Victoria’s Mayors as a partner and capacity builder, supporting them and their councils to deliver for their communities. This is an exciting journey as we nurture a new generation of leaders ready to make a difference. I thank all of them for their commitment, passion and willingness to learn. #MayorsInstitute #LocalGovernment #Leadership Natalie Walker Lisa Gandolfo Maria Dimopoulos Leanne Hodyl Cathy Oke Tahlia Azaria Libby Mears Mark Hayes Ika Trijsburg

Good governance of Academy Trusts is of vital importance for the future of education and the wellbeing and success of our children. Trusts vary in size and in their management structure, therefore the roles of the CEO and Chair can in practice be nuanced from one Trust to the next. That is why our Schools Practice is currently researching the relationship between CEOs and Chairs in Academy Trusts, so that we can identify and share what good practise looks like within Trust leadership. If you are a CEO or Chair working in a Single or Multi Academy Trust, we would really value your contribution of personal insights and experiences to our research. To take part in the research, please email schools@andersonquigley.com with your name, job title and Trust name. For further details about the research, visit: https://lnkd.in/eHvyKPcH.
