Rackin’ up the awards.. 🙌🏻 Kuder Galaxy is a personal favorite - a hard truth slammed into me when I joined Kuder: you cannot be what you cannot see. This certainly hit home for a kid from rural Iowa who didn’t understand the breadth of careers and occupations in the world. Honestly, I can lament that, but another truth is that some similar limitations will always persist: kids’ world view is largely fueled by the community they live in and the people in their lives. Galaxy helps elementary educators and counselors take aim straight at this conundrum: to expand kids’ knowledge and understanding about the world of work through gamified, age appropriate learning content. Set in space, this learning software exposes a comprehensive view of the world of work, over 100 different occupations, and allows kids to explore all of that without the inherent biases we can create in our own mind based on gender or ethnicity. As a parent of 6 and 8 year old girls, I see and hear them asking questions about work. Funny story: when my dad (retired for 13 years) was on his laptop, my daughter asked him if he was working. Clearly my work and my husband’s work is nearly 100% computer based! The takeaway - knowledge about the world of work doesn’t just slam into kids, we have to build an understanding and awareness that there are jobs outside of teacher, nurse, software engineer, etc. so they can be prepared to make informed plans and decisions about their future.

🎓 Today marks a bittersweet milestone as my children celebrate their last day of school for the 2023-2024 school year! Next year, my oldest will be a senior in high school! My bonus son will be a freshman in high school My daughter will be in the middle of the worst years ever, attending 7th grade 🤢 And last, but not least, my two bonus girls (twins) will be starting their middle school journey in 6th grade! 📚 It's incredible to witness their growth year over year, from those tentative first steps into kindergarten to the confident strides they now take as they prepare for this next chapter. As a parent, this journey is a testament to their resilience, curiosity, and boundless potential, especially due to their military up bringing! 🌟 Just as they've learned and evolved, so have I – both personally and professionally. Reflecting on their growth got me thinking about my own journey in the professional realm. Each year brings new challenges, opportunities, and lessons learned. Just like my kids, I strive to embrace these experiences, learn from them, and grow stronger. This parallel between my children's educational journey and my professional growth is a reminder of the importance of continuous learning, adaptability, and perseverance. 💼📈 It's a journey marked by milestones, setbacks, and triumphs – all of which contribute to our development and success. So as we celebrate this milestone together, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to witness and support my children's growth, and I'm inspired to continue nurturing my own growth journey in the years to come. A recent round 2 application for an accelerator programme asked for a video of the leader pitching EduSpots in just 90 seconds. Usually I'd rather this type of video come from the Catalyst or learner voice, but here goes 🚴 …. These #elevatorpitches are always tricky - we went for 3 things that make EduSpots special (of many!)... 1. The unique way in which different realisations of the concept of community leadership is embedded into the local Spot model, and wider organisational development, with 60% of the staff team coming from Spot Catalyst backgrounds. 2. The traction the model has locally, with learners quickly becoming future Catalysts, and Catalysts moving communities and requesting to start new Spots, with some Spots leading their education activities for 8 years now, with costs sustained locally, but supported by a wider network. 3. Value for money - within our model, one calculation (total organisation income divided by number of Spot learners annually) reflects that it costs just £17/year for one learner to access a Spot. This gives them access to a safe space to study with light, a range of quality, play-based and practical education clubs, support from local mentors and a selection of education resources including books, devices and STEM kits.
