Nearly 20 years ago, we were reviewing student transcripts at the comprehensive high school where I led the counseling department and seeing this EXACT SAME data that continues to play out, as a result of the system and not the students. (EdSource:https://lnkd.in/gUjTwdNg) Our path was: + an intensive investment in the relationship with the students and their families who were not enrolled in courses to meet basic college eligibilty. +bringing a high quality implementation of AVID to our campus +defaulting course enrollment INTO A-G courses as opposed to waiting for opt-in +maintaining close relationships with the teachers of the students and the students themselves to change the outcomes. One year later our eligibilty rates started to soar. What do you do to change the system, not the students? https://lnkd.in/gUjTwdNg

It is going to take commitment, barrier removal, individualized support, and institutional willingness to be flexible and engage conversations about change to get students to the finish line.
