Founder, RECO Education | BA Stanford, MA UChicago | Helping high schoolers connect the dots between academics, the real world, and themselves.
Education should align a student's personal passions and their formal curriculum. Yes. But there is a crucial element missing here. Students can only understand the relevance of studies to their lives, first by understanding the implications of knowledge on the society in which they live and their place in it. In an influential essay from 1902, John Dewey – a pioneer in experiential and student-centred learning – makes this argument better than anyone I have read. However, I have a bone to pick with him. His essay is titled “The Child and the Curriculum”, but in my opinion, it should be titled, “The Child, SOCIETY, and the Curriculum” Indeed, education is separate neither from the real world, nor the real, rich, personal life and self-understanding of the student. That’s why, at RECO Education, we help high schoolers connect the dots between academics, the real-world, and themselves. Our upcoming virtual programme specially designed for an exclusive cohort of up to just sixteen high schoolers in Grades 10-11, Finding Your Academic Purpose, starts on October 26, 2024. Applications close on October 13. Join for a live Zoom info session TOMORROW, Wednesday, October 2nd at 7PM IST, to learn more about the programme and how it can help students build depth, plan their next steps better, and find an intellectual community.
