Ally Behavior Centers shared a great strategy at the university career fair: Instead of applying to countless jobs randomly, focus on companies you genuinely want to work for. By connecting with alumni on LinkedIn and your university’s alumni portal, you can learn more about the company culture and the role you're interested in. These connections can help you get in touch with hiring managers, giving your resume a better chance of being reviewed by decision-makers, rather than just being filtered through an online portal.

After attending the practice career fair I came away with a lot of pointers and insight for the next real career fair. I thought that speaking to all the employers at the practice fair was valuable for learning and preparing me for the real thing. During this fair talking to multiple people I was able to refine my pitch once I understood what most of the employers were looking for. I would say overall this event helped me a lot with my networking and communication skills especially in a business environment. During this fair I realized the importance of asking the right questions, a lot of the companies were looking for this right off the bat. Beyond this thought I would say that following up and your first impression are two of the most important things I learned about. I thought that this practice fair was definitely a big help to prepare for the real thing. This fair proved to me that preparation is a big thing. Although I wasn’t 100% prepared this time I will be now. I also think that learning how to adapt and think quickly on your feet is a skill I’ll be trying to bring to the real career fair. Now after practicing and having a little bit of a clearer vision of what it’s gonna be like, I’m definitely more confident. I plan to use all the skills and knowledge that I’ve gained to be as successful as possible with the real career fair. I look forward to meeting more professional people in business and expanding my network.

On Wednesday I had the privilege of attending Birmingham University's Part-Time careers fair. A great initiative focused on helping students gain transferable skills and earn money whilst they work towards their career goals. This is by far my favourite careers fair because: 👉🏾 Over 700 students register to attend. 👉🏾 Over 75% of students that attend are from ethnic backgrounds. 👉🏾 I improve brand awareness within the community and promote Screwfix as an employer of choice. I also shared some hints and tips with the students on how to navigate the application process including: ✅Tell us the hours you CAN work, not what you WOULD like to work. ✅Study the job description beforehand and ensure your CV draws out some of the skills we are looking for. ✅You all have experience so think about times when you have worked in a team, communicated with different people or had deadlines to meet - it doesn't always have to be previous retail experience! What do you do to help the next generation navigate job hunting? Share your tips below 👇🏾
