The HAA Regional Community Development Team was in Wainwright recently for the Rural Health Professions Action Plan (RhPAP) 2024 Rural Community Conference! The conference showcased leaders in Rural Health, from administration to front-line health professionals and our team had a great time meeting others and collaborating on how to strengthen Alberta systems for older adults. The event highlighted the need for action across multiple sectors such as community and housing alongside health to address the pressures on our rural health systems and the retention of rural health care professionals. We learned a lot and some of our key insights included the following: - Innovative ways to improve health professionals' recruitment and retention in rural areas. Some examples we heard: Interactive workshops and various methods to inspire rural youth to consider becoming a health professional which is a "grow your own approach"; exploring partnerships between rural communities and education institutions to minimize barriers to securing a career in their community; CPSA’s work to review policy and to streamline the registration process for physicians looking to practice in Rural areas of Alberta; etc. - Inspiring examples of work to support equitable healthcare access to Indigenous communities in Northern Alberta through virtual care and referral. - Engaging conversations on the future of health care. Participants learned about various models across the nation and globe with a key focus on shifting from medical "sick care" to upstream health and prevention; adopting Artificial Intelligence into healthcare; the importance of integration of community-based social serving organizations and other large systems (e.g., housing) to meet the ever-changing needs of the fast-growing older adult population in Alberta. It was easy to see how our continued partnerships with health will positively impact the well-being of rural older adults and how models such as social prescribing could be foundational in shifting to a more preventative and holistic approach to health. Do any of these insights resonate with you and your community? Share your experience with us. ⬇️ Check out their highlight video ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gmeJgZWv #albertaseniors #albertahealth #healthyagingalberta

Where we live – the streets, estates, and neighbourhoods that we call home – has a profound effect on our health, wealth and wellbeing. Our new report with 3ni, the national network for neighbourhood improvement, produced by Shared Intelligence, examines how local authorities in England are using neighbourhood approaches to support their most disadvantaged areas. It found that 32 out of 34 local authorities had some form of neighbourhood working being directed at their most disadvantaged wards. Read more about the evidence at: https://lnkd.in/eeYwsX7W

"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." This proverb came to life during our recent strategic planning retreat with Illinois Community Health Workers Association (ILCHWA). What happens when you bring together community health workers from across Illinois, each passionate about health equity, each with unique perspectives on the future of their profession? Magic. But magic needs method: • Bilingual facilitation ensuring every voice was heard • Virtual collaboration breaking down geographic barriers • Interactive exercises turning big visions into actionable plans • Real-time translation making inclusion more than just a buzzword Watching these dedicated professionals map out the future of community health work in Illinois is why we do what we do: It's about community impact. It's about health equity. It's about transforming systems. To the incredible ILCHWA team - thank you for trusting us with this important work. Your dedication to creating healthier, more equitable communities across Illinois is truly inspiring. Here's a video of the retreat that we hosted in June 2024

I’ve been reflecting on the voices I’ve been hearing lately—graduates, rural EHOs, seniors, and managers in the local government regulatory space. One thing is clear: so many of you are ready to create real change, but you feel stuck. The politics, the lack of experience, or the “where do I even start?” can feel paralyzing. So, where do we start? We start at the beginning. With you. Just like building a house, it all begins with strong foundations. Who is the EHO you want to become? What does that person stand for? What vision do you have for your role in your community? Once you lay those foundations, you can begin to build—the bricks and walls of your knowledge, skills, and confidence. And when those foundations are solid, they’ll carry you through even the most uncomfortable and challenging days in local government. And here’s the thing: you’re not alone. Us EHOs are one big family, and we’re here to support each other every step of the way. With over 20 years in the field, it’s been my greatest honor to help colleagues, EHOs, and LG officers across Queensland navigate their journey. It’s time for change. It’s time to stand together and declare: you are worth it! Reach out if you need help. Let’s build something incredible together. #EHOCommunity #FoundationsOfChange #SupportingEachOther #StrongerTogether #eha #environmentalhealthofficer #publichealth #changemakers #community #rural

Hi there Linkedin luminaries! Do you have any examples of community service needs planning at a municipal level? In particular, holistic, integrated and cross organisational approaches. If so please share in the comments below or message me! This is no easy task as the broader you go, the greater the complexity and interdependencies. Our default in Local Government, not surprisingly, is to plan by a particular cohort or subject (e.g. early years/youth services, a sport, a community facility). And nothing wrong with that. But how do you go further? Relevant considerations could include: links to regional efforts, the intersection with Council’s existing community assets, Federal and State Government service delivery, existing local planning strategies (e.g. community visions, municipal health and wellbeing plans, asset plans), the mapping of service providers and their activities operating within a geographic area, and then finally, resourcing and responsibility dynamics for the community service needs planning in question. Would very much welcome your reflections and wisdom!
