Ah, the paradox of design! Paul Rand reminds us that simplicity in design is far from simple. Achieving that clean, uncluttered look often involves a complex process of elimination, making every line and curve purposeful. #PaulRand #DesignParadox #SimplicityIsComplicated #PurposefulDesign #MinimalistComplexity

Last Wednesday, I met Jeroen Spoelstra, founder of the Life-Centered Design School. It was an opportunity to exchange perspectives on sustainability and design. Our conversation covered both mainstream and emerging design approaches, such as circular design, life-centred design, more-than-human design, interspecies design, indigenous design, etc. Find attached a list of approaches I've compiled. Emerging design approaches are increasingly focused on addressing global challenges, with some being rooted in research, others driven by practice, and some also serving as a call to action, like 'design for planet' by Design Council. In general, these approaches involve a shift towards systemic design reframing global challenges and emphasising co-design processes to tackle them. They all push the boundaries of traditional design in their own distinct ways. For example, life-centred design - expanding beyond the human-centred approach - considers people, non-humans and the planet as three interdependent life groups and is a multi-approach practice integrating, among others, circular design, pluriversal design and interspecies design. There is clearly an in-flux of emerging design approaches. But which ones will have the greatest impact in shaping a more sustainable future? 💼💡 Sharing some wisdom from design icon Dieter Rams: "Good design is consistent in every detail. Good design is environmentally friendly. And last but not least, good design is as little design as possible." These words resonate deeply with me as they underscore the importance of simplicity, sustainability, and attention to detail in design. In a world where complexity often reigns, striving for simplicity can lead to more impactful and sustainable solutions. Let's embrace these principles as we shape the future of design. #Design #Simplicity #Sustainability #DieterRams
