Today I attended a webinar for Black Inclusion Week focussed on ‘Leveraging Data to Enhance Progression and Inclusion of Black Colleagues'. The session, which included a lively discussion and Q&A reaffirmed some key points for me including: ➡️Initiatives informed by data which identify and remove barriers for Black colleagues wanting to progress are not a ‘nice to have’, they are absolutely necessary. ➡️Organisations are not static - they are made up of people (not numbers!) so the data we measure and ‘what good looks like’ will constantly evolve. Continuous improvement is vital. ➡️Qualitative data goes hand in hand with story telling - a powerful tool when working to make a real difference. ➡️Intersectionality is crucial when analysing data – Black colleagues are not a monolithic group. ➡️It’s discouraging when there is stagnant progress or inconsistencies between corporate narratives and Black colleagues' realities. Reviewing data regularly, being transparent in communications and continuously addressing identified issues is key. ➡️Increasing survey participation is important, but the true impact lies in translating data into meaningful action. When it comes to inclusivity, themes that emerge from even small datasets are valuable. ➡️Survey fatigue can be a challenge (working in Communications I know this all too well). Demonstrating that data is being acted on to create positive change can help with this. Data collection campaigns should share findings and be clear on what has been done/ will be done to address any areas needing focus. ➡️Existing information available in organisation systems shouldn’t be overlooked e.g training and development data. These can reveal a lot and highlight areas that need attention. There is so much more that resonated with me but I’ll leave it there! Thanks to the organisers and speakers for a great session!
