I have read quite a bit about #nursing history in the United States including how the evolution of the integration of black nurses black nurses evolved over time. I would not even dare to behave like I know a fraction of black nurses’ overaching determination to exist in the profession here in the United States. The fact that fewer than 20% of leadership roles in nursing administration education and professional organizations are held by nurses of color speaks to the fact that we have a lot of work to do to tip the scales of equity. I feel this is one additional aspect that highlights the importance of focusing our efforts at recruiting more men into the nursing profession, which by the way seems to be working. Statistically, men have held, and now still, hold a disproportionate share of leadership positions in the U.S.(which is for another post). However, in nursing, the latest numbers indicate approximately 10-12% of men hold leadership positions overall. Bringing more men into the profession does not just bring white men, but ALL races, allowing more diversity and improved patient outcomes. *Patient outcomes are improved when the workforce mirrors the population being served.

It's always interesting to consider how we interview folks and ask questions related to EDI work & leadership... and yet, we sit on panels (myself included) who don't always reflect our nurses nor our patients diversity. Just some food for thought- if we are asking folks questions directly related to diversity & equity then shouldn't our panels must reflect those same values. It's not enough to ask the question.

Efforts to diversify nursing are essential to dismantling barriers to equity and fostering a more inclusive profession. But confronting racism within nursing demands collective action and introspection. By delving into the rich history of nursing associations, addressing systemic biases through research and challenging entrenched hierarchies, nurses can jointly forge a path toward a more just future for healthcare.
