📉 Accounting Graduates Decline: Urgent Call for Industry Reflection Alarming data from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants reveals a 7.4% drop in accounting graduates, intensifying a six-year trend. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees both plummeted, exacerbating the challenge of filling crucial roles in the face of a dwindling talent pool. 💼 Industry Shortage and Strategies: With less than 1% of small- to medium-size CPA firms finding qualified U.S. candidates, the profession grapples with a significant shortage. Efforts to address gaps include hiring overseas, leveraging technology, and pre-emptively securing students pre-graduation. 🎓 Factors Behind the Decline: Reasons cited for the profession's waning allure range from the 150-credit-hour requirement for a CPA license to perceptions of limited career progression and comparatively lower starting pay. Calls for educational reforms, emphasizing technology integration and apprenticeships, echo throughout the article. 💡 Industry Voices: Accounting and financial executives stress the need for a holistic approach, combining competitive salaries with work/life balance, job satisfaction, and innovative use of technology. Beyond monetary incentives, they argue for reevaluating educational and professional structures to attract and retain a new generation of accounting professionals. Let's dive into these challenges together and brainstorm solutions! How can we reshape the narrative and make the accounting profession more appealing for future talent? As we all meet and speak to students who are wondering about their majors and career path, don't forget to talk about the incredible opportunities afforded by and accounting degree. Pass it on. "An accounting degree can be the key to an excellent business, finance, and banking career, unlocking a world of opportunity for those who possess it. Students who finish their accounting degree can work as accountants, auditors, financial analysts, or bookkeepers. For this reason, accounting is one of the most widely sought degrees in many universities. According to college statistics published in the Journal of Accountancy, there were nearly 208,000 students enrolled in undergraduate accounting programs in the school year 2017-2018, setting the second-highest number on record for over a decade (Tysiac, 2019). Many of the oldest colleges in the US also offer accountant degree programs." #accounting #futureaccountants #accountingdegrees #accountingmajor #highereducation #accountingfirms #practicemanagement #recruitment #accountingrecruitment https://lnkd.in/gRcw2kDw

To the 2024 new interns in public accounting - welcome!! This is for all of you, not just those that joined the best firm in the world (HHM - if that needs clarifying). Welcome to an exciting time and the start of your career - you picked a phenomenal industry to go into, but I am sure you already know that. There is a large need for public accountants in the future, so you picked a secure and well-paying future - one that can be customized to your preferences. You can be partner, you can start your own firm, you can work a reduced schedule and focus on yourself, you can work with non-profits, you can become connected to the most powerful and influential people in your city, etc. Some of you have no idea what you are in store for, some of you think you know but will be caught off guard, and some of you will somehow magically already be prepared. Regardless, at the end of April, you will all have a new outlook on what public accounting is as a whole. Some quick advice : - Remain humble, this is the most important rule - Keep a good attitude, never complain about the people you work with, even when you are in a room with others who complain about them. - Take the scary projects - these are the ones you learn from - You will be working with interns who already know they want to make partner, and interns who aren't even sure they want to do public accounting for a living. Focus on yourself and your own path - you do not have to want the same things as each other or the same future. There is still a spot for you, and that spot is valuable - To the point above - focus on yourself!!!! If one intern seems to be getting all the work, don't get discouraged. Don't compare - I promise you - PROMISE YOU - that the standards set while you are an intern do not correspond at all to your full time career. Trust me on this one. Thats all I've got! If you can give any of the new 2024 interns advice - please feel free to add below! 😊
