The understaffing crisis reverberates beyond the prison walls. When correction staff levels are low, this can have an effect on incarcerated individuals' access to important programs and care. This can include: ⚫ Training programs for incarcerated people being put on hold. ⚫ Lockdowns becoming more frequent. ⚫ Crucial visitation from family members stopped. ⚫ Mental and physical health services becoming more limited. All of these programs are vital in helping incarcerated people’s rehabilitation and ensuring that they successfully reintegrate into their community. Without them, prisons are releasing incarcerated people back into the community without the rehabilitation needed to succeed after serving their sentence in prison. This puts our communities at risk. To ensure the safety of our communities, we’re raising awareness of the staffing crisis so rehabilitation and support given to incarcerated people can continue to be delivered. A report “Growing Old and Dying Inside” by a leading charity Prison Reform Trust, highlights the urgent need for reforms to cater to the UK’s ageing prisoner population, focusing particularly on healthcare disparities. The pressure on the Service to provide decent, safe and rehabilitative secure environments is probably as acute as it has ever been, particularly with the current and very real overcrowding challenges. ⁉️ An insightful Q&A with Milazim Gjocaj, Head of Prison Health Department - Ministry of Health on Protocols and tools dealing with safeguards against ill-treatment in line with the Istanbul Protocol focusing on prisoners with mental health disorders. During a recent Compassion Trauma Circle session at a correctional facility, participants bravely faced their pasts. Prompted by experiences of childhood trauma—verbal abuse, neglect, poverty—individuals shared powerful stories of resilience and survival. These sessions, led with deep empathy and without judgment, provide a safe space for healing. Participants openly discuss their battles with addiction, struggles with identity, and the enduring effects of their pasts. Through community and compassion, they find solidarity in shared pain and strength in mutual support. At the heart of these sessions is the Compassion Prison Project, spearheaded by Fritzi Horstman. This initiative champions trauma-informed care and rehabilitation within the prison system. By prioritizing mental health support, education, and holistic recovery, the project aims to break cycles of trauma and incarceration. Together, we can foster environments of understanding and healing, recognizing the humanity and potential for transformation in every individual. HMP Oakwood: Highly successful, with a safe and supportive culture A large category C training prison near Wolverhampton, Oakwood holds a broad range of prisoners, from those serving relatively short sentences to lifers and vulnerable prisoners. Around 80% of all those held were considered to be a high risk of harm to others. Yet, despite these challenges, Oakwood continued to be a highly successful prison. Healthy establishment scores: 🔒 Safety: Good ⚖ Respect: Good 📚 Purposeful activity: Good 📅 Preparation for release: Reasonably good Points to note: 📄 Time out of cell was better than similar jails and staff-prisoner relationships were positive. 📄 There had been no serious incidents of self-harm for nine months. 📄 The prison held exceptional family support events. 📄 There were some concerns with overcrowding, drugs, an under-resourced OMU and prisoners being released homeless. Notable positive practice (NPP): ✅ Food-related activity was used well to build relationships and engagement in the regime: for example, prisoners on the higher levels of the incentives scheme could buy and cook for themselves, and many prepared meals for their peers, contributing to a community spirit. ✅ Wing workers started work in roles such as wing and servery workers and frequently gained promotions into supervisory roles, such as house block leads. Most wing workers developed the knowledge and skills that they needed to support them to gain employment on release. ✅ A second, smaller visits area with a well-equipped kitchen was used for a wide range of valued family interventions, such as a kids club, family days and family cooking events. 🔍 Read the full report and further examples of NPP here: https://lnkd.in/e79QAXv7

Yesterday was a busy day with two visits to HMP Preston, where we met with seven veterans in custody. During the visits, we discussed support plans for three individuals who may be nearing release, ensuring that they have options to explore when they re-enter society. The remaining veterans were reassured that we are here to provide ongoing support whenever needed. These efforts are vital in helping them transition successfully and ensuring they have the resources and guidance necessary for a fresh start. Supporting prisoners in custody is crucial for several reasons. First, it promotes rehabilitation by addressing the underlying issues that may have led to criminal behavior, such as mental health struggles, addiction, or lack of education. Effective support helps them acquire the skills and mindset needed for reintegration into society, reducing the likelihood of reoffending. Additionally, providing care and support in custody fosters a safer prison environment, as prisoners who feel supported are less likely to engage in violence or disruptive behavior. Finally, supporting prisoners benefits society as a whole by breaking the cycle of crime and being sent to prison, leading to safer communities and reduced costs associated with repeat offenders.

For most women, prison isn’t working.    Two-thirds of women in prison report being victims of domestic abuse, over half are mothers, and an estimated 17,000 children are affected every year.     Today, Lord Chancellor Shabana Mahmood opened the first Women's Justice Board meeting, setting our vision for change.      The Board’s task is clear: to reduce the number of women in prison.     It will:    🔵 develop better community alternatives to prison   🔵 help women address why they offend   🔵 support mums to stay connected with their children.      Prisons, Probation and Reducing Reoffending Minister James Timpson, who chairs the Board, visited Willowdene Rehabilitation Centre to see first-hand how community-based solutions can transform lives.      While prison remains vital for serious offences, non-custodial sentences can help to tackle the root causes of offending. Through mandatory testing and strict oversight, offenders must overcome addiction while maintaining work and family responsibilities, often proving more challenging than prison but leading to lasting change.      Learn more about how we're transforming women's justice:     

This is fantastic news! Creating a dedicated wing for neurodivergent individuals at HMP Lewes is a significant step towards providing tailored support for a population that often faces unique challenges within the prison system. It's commendable to see the initiative taken by prison officers and management to better understand and accommodate the needs of neurodivergent individuals, including those with autism, ADHD, Tourette’s, dyslexia, and other conditions. The recognition that a substantial portion of the prison population has neurodivergent needs highlights the importance of addressing these issues systematically. By providing specialised support and accommodations, such as tailored programmes and understanding staff, we can improve outcomes for both the individuals and society as a whole. Furthermore, linking this initiative to reducing recidivism rates is incredibly insightful. Understanding the root causes of behaviour and providing appropriate interventions can indeed lead to more positive outcomes, ultimately reducing the burden on taxpayers and preventing further harm to victims. I share your optimism about the potential impact of such changes and hope to see more initiatives like this implemented across the country. HMP Lewes is a category B reception and resettlement prison for adult and young adult men. In 2022, our unannounced inspection of Lewes was concerning enough for us to return for an independent review of progress (IRP) in February 2023. Disappointingly during that review, we found that things had got even worse, with some prisoners routinely getting less than an hour out of their cell a day, a shortage of frontline officers and a staff team with low morale. Unusually therefore, I decided that we would announce this inspection, giving the prison six months notice to prepare. Healthy establishment scores: 🔒 Safety: Not sufficiently good ⚖ Respect: Not sufficiently good 📚 Purposeful activity: Poor 📅 Preparation for release: Not sufficiently good Points to note: 📄 Over half the population needed support for substance misuse, with a positive MDT rate of 28% 📄 Only a third were in education or work; too many spent under 2 hrs unlocked 📄 When first night cells were full, new arrivals were housed on vulnerable prisoner wing. Notable positive practice (NPP): ✅ Prison Family Support, a small local organisation with enthusiastic caseworkers, helped prisoners from Lewes navigate contact with their children, complementing the family support work of PACT (Prison Advice and Care Trust).
