We support the National Disability Services’ call for stricter registration processes for all NDIS providers, and welcome the government’s statement to now require all platform providers, support coordinators and Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers to be registered. Carers Australia Chairperson Cathy O'Toole (pictured on the left) contributed to a panel discussion at the National NDIS Review taking place at Australian Parliament House today.   She spoke about the importance have having carers engaged and supported and the opportunity for lived experience of carers to become system navigators in the NDIS.   The conference was part of the "Communities of Practice Transformation Series" to advance 26 key recommendations to shape the future of the NDIS.   Carers Australia's firm belief is people with disabilities and their families should be able to access support whether they are in the NDIS or not. The latest NDIS quarterly report shows that as at 30 September 2023, 336 (18%) home and living applications remained in progress for more than 90 days. This is an increase of 9% from the previous quarter. We have seen real progress in the timeliness of decision-making over the past year, but we cannot afford to go backwards. Shorter wait times and increased access to appropriate housing and supports create better outcomes for participants and ensure participants are not forced into residential aged care or other inappropriate settings. People with disability shouldn’t have to wait months for a decision. Let's turn months of delays into action in 10 days.
