This week's entry from My Academic Family, CIC's #Encyclopedia of #University Terms is about the first #exams students will take that sets them on their way to university level education. While #students won't see Nat5s or GCSEs listed on the entry requirements for university courses, students will want to seriously think about what they might want to study in #university before selecting their subjects for Nat5/GCSE as students will usually take the same topics from the Nat5/GCSE level forward into Highers/Advanced Highers or A-levels. If you have a young student in your life who will need to select their Nat5/GCSE subjects in the next year, it's great to start talking with them now about what subjects they enjoy, what subjects they can or do excel in, and what kinds of university courses these subjects may lend themselves towards. TLDR: APSTEM now hosts study sessions during exam seasons, on the subjects in the image. At APSTEM, we're committed to supporting students both professionally through mentoring and academically through study sessions. Following the success of our first Mathematics Study Session, we're thrilled to announce that these sessions will now be a regular feature during A-level and mock exam seasons. Our study sessions, currently run by the APSTEM team, are designed to encourage student engagement and collaboration. We actively encourage students to share any questions or topics they find challenging. Based on feedback from our community, we'll be displaying subject/topic specific exam questions on screen, then allow students 5-10 minutes to attempt them independently. Afterwards, students have the opportunity to explain their answers, with session leaders stepping in to provide guidance as needed. Our session leaders hold As and A*s in the subjects covered. In future sessions, while our team is available to support students with questions, from the enthusiasm we’ve seen from students we’re happy to say that the students can join at the specified times and work in the sessions themselves, sharing questions they struggle on and helping each other overall. Just reflecting on how much has changed in SG's education system since "I Not Stupid": ✅ DSA for admission based on non-academic abilities (leave the debate on outcomes for another day tho) ✅ Changed PSLE scoring from grading on a curve, to grading for absolute achievement. Moved away from T-score to achievement bands ✅ Scrapped streaming at pri and sec school. Sec sch replaced with SSB ✅ Specialized sec schools at both ends of the academic achievement spectrums ✅ EAE for admissions to polytechnics based on interest, ability and passion for subject of study ✅ Much much higher permeability between JC, polys, ITEs and universities ✅Lifelong learning in Skillsfuture ✅Scrapping of GEP

OLA students achieve academic excellence as A* grades have more than doubled over last year! Five students, Benjamin, Aaryan, Alvin, Alfie and Benedict achieved straight A* and A grades, compared to two last year. Benjamin achieved an incredible 4 A*s. Alfie not only attained two A*'s in Physics and Maths and an A in Computer studies - he also achieved an A in Further maths. Aaryan also achieved an A in AS Further Maths, while Virginia, who joined OLA for sixth form achieved her first choice of university and the next highest grades in the cohort. Grades A* - B and C returned a similar result to last year with some students achieving a good academic growth on their GCSE results. OLA has a diverse range of students, some of whom have additional needs, and it is a testament to the strong relationships between students and teachers that each and every individual is able to fulfil their potential.
