TLDR: The lens through which you view your patient or your research affects the solution I am often aware in my clinical practice and in my research that the language we use to describe pheonomena directs the solutions that are suggested or implemented. There is a difference between describing a lower “uptake” in healthcare amongst minority groups or groups with higher deprivation levels and perceiving this as an access to healthcare issue. The former puts the onus on the individual to seek healthcare, often addressed by education initiatives, and the latter which puts the onus on the system to identify and remove barriers to access to care. Same with ‘vaccine hestitancy’ and ‘vaccine confidence’ as described by Mati Hlatshwayo Davis, MD, MPH, FIDSA here. It is all about the lens through which you view your patient or your research and we have a responsibility to inform our lens.

Today was Human Resources for Health day in our Comparative Health Systems course at UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences - one of my favorite topics! The day's agenda included: ➡ A guest lecture by Bonaventure Ahaisibwe on HRH challenges, Seed Global Health's impact in this space, and the importance of context for health workers working/studying in countries other than their country of origin. When working in another culture, he says, "remember: someone has gone before you." ➡ Health workforce supply issues, affected by many factors including burnout and emigration. ➡ Debate regarding the merits of compulsory service for newly minted medical doctors.
