Should we allow voting to take place in schools while students are in class? I’m not a #schoolsafety expert in anyway, but I have been involved with responding to and also preventing various critical incidents at or near schools, previously served on the Lyndhurst, NJ Board of Education and participated in preparing the New Jersey School Boards Association report “What Makes Schools Safe?”. Today, I dropped my son off for school and noticed that we have primary voting in New Jersey and the high school is open to the public. Also, candidates can choose to stand in front of the entryway, outside of the 100’ buffer, to engage with people walking by. Of course we do have security and poll workers, but I would argue that people who are neither students nor staff do not belong in a school while in session. Ingress and egress are traditionally the most dangerous time of any event, schools are no different. So today, while students are walking in or being dropped off, others are mingling into the crowd to enter as well. Potential candidates can be set up on the students path in. The collective goal, of all stakeholders, is to keep people who don’t belong inside, out of a school. However, for these one or two days, we purposely let them in. Why? Are there no other public venues available to host voting or voting machines? Voting machine trailers brought to public property, community centers, senior citizen housing activities area, gyms that aren’t attached to schools, or close school and make it virtual school day. This situation is at least a major distraction to students and staff, but at worst could potentially invite threats making it a vulnerability. Erik Endress Dr. Kenneth S.
