FROM PAYSLIP TO POCKET..... is the name of an interactive session that I've created to help people understand.... 💡 How to read a payslip and the importance of highlighting and correcting any errors 💡 What is deducted from your pay and why, and 💡 What the taxes you pay are used to fund. I may be a bit biased but it's the session that I think that every adult should have. Recently, I delivered it to over 90 apprentices and now... ✅ 82% are now going to check their payslip (less than 50% were checking their payslip beforehand). ✅ Knowledge/confidence in the topics covered has improved from 6.5 out of 10 to 8.5 out of 10 following the workshop. There were also lots of comments around the wish that this had been taught in school. Some people say that we don't need to teach financial education in schools but I disagree. I think we need to start early, make it age appropriate and adopt a little and often approach. Because if it's not being taught in school (or in the home), where are we learning about this stuff? And if it's not covered in school, employers and training organisations are the next best place. So it's great that organisations like Kaplan UK recognise this and arranged for me to deliver this to their apprentices as part of their Enrichment Week. A common worry for Actuarial students is the threat of exam clawbacks if they leave for a new opportunity... It is true that in most cases, firms will try to clawback any exam costs within the last 12 months. This will usually also include the exam support and study materials etc. However, this is no longer a reason to stay in your current role if you are unhappy, as there is a solution. All of the companies I have worked with have reimbursed the clawback costs to ensure nobody is out of pocket when starting a new role, every single time. An independent regulator for English professional men's football is one step closer! ⚽ The new regulator is going to face a number of challenges, including how to achieve its objective of promoting financial sustainability in the English men's football pyramid down to National League level - without impacting adversely on the competitiveness of our leagues or jeopardising inwards investment. ⚽ And, in such a high profile and passionately followed sporting industry, how to communicate effectively with all stakeholders. This will be on both what it expects clubs to do to comply with the new rules, and what it does (and why) when exercising its powers to sanction clubs and their owners when they don't! ⚽ There are parallels here to what we have seen over many years in the pensions regulatory environment. The Pensions Regulator's approach to regulating and sanctioning companies with funding responsibilities to their associated DB pension schemes (akin to the owner's relationship to a football club) has evolved considerably over the past 20 years - learning from experience and (generally) becoming more effective and less controversial over time.
