Ph.D. | Marketing Strategist | Science Career Coach | Personal Branding | Guiding science students to get hired in their desired job roles
Life Sciences individuals are one of the smartest pools of individuals when it comes to learning new aspects, being resilient, and establishing understanding of a new concept. These are the most desired traits that companies look for in their employees. Yet, life sciences individuals struggle to get hired. Why? This is because life sciences individuals focus just on “pursuit of knowledge”. We are so eager to learn that we forget about our own career. Throughout our educational journey which goes until PhD and Postdoc, we only think, “I am so much interested in this topic that I want to learn more and discover more.” Do you see the problem here as I see? As much as learning and pursuit of knowledge is essential, we need to start thinking about our career goal as well. Only learning will not fetch you a job unless you showcase how you can apply your expertise in solving problems. If you want to study a topic in detail and you decide to do a PhD then you also need to think about what you are going to do beyond Ph.D. Now don’t say postdoc! because, then my question to you will be, “Okay, what after that?” Have you put in a thought of how you are going to use this kind of expertise to find a job, be it in industry or academia? Believe me, none of us do. And this is what has to change. We need to broaden our thought process to “how you will be using the knowledge you acquire to build and grow in your career?” .......................... Well, if you want me to guide you how you can do it, check out my newly launched "Biocareer Launchpad" which has 20 live teaching sessions to train you to become confident in career building within just a month! Ph.D. | Marketing Strategist | Science Career Coach | Personal Branding | Guiding science students to get hired in their desired job roles
A message to candidates pursuing PhD: "If you start your PhD with an open mindset, you can have multiple job opportunities even before you submit your thesis.!" However, I think the major problem is people do not feel comfortable thinking outside of academia because they are not aware of what exists outside of it. What kind of opportunities are there for PhDs, how to approach these and specially in India there is a lot of darkness around this information. Another problem that demotivates PhDs to join the industry is the kind of job profiles that are mostly posted. Either those will only demand MSc or experience! Very few job profiles mention PhDs in their qualification required. Some times these jobs even pay lesser than what a PhD should deserve. But does that mean there are lesser job opportunities for PhDs. No absolutely not! If you start in the right manner, take the right strategy to network and leverage resources at your hand, you can get your desired job! The question is are YOU WILLING TO BUILD YOUR CAREER OUTSIDE ACADEMIA? Because where I come from, many people do not respect the opinion of a PhD holder trying to get a job in the industry. They think its below their intellect level to even think about it. They say, " If you are doing great in your PhD, then the only way to justify your hard work is to become a professor". They guess that jobs outside academia waste your talent and do not hone your research acumen. And almost each one of us is bothered about what the society has to say about you. What will other people think? It is difficult to take steps in this direction amidst all this chaos. Consequently, a PhD holder keeps pursuing postdoc after postdoc under different designation with no clarity on where their actions are leading to in the future. It's high time to be vocal about these aspects, to normalize having a career outside academia and make PhD holders aware of the right approach and strategy to get employed in an industry. The limiting factor in this case is the mindset of candidates pursuing PhDs and there is a dire need for them to be proactive in learning how to approach well deserved opportunities using platforms like LinkedIn and leveraging networking by them. .......................................... Biotechnology is a rapidly evolving field with immense potential, yet many graduates struggle to secure core positions in the industry especially in India! One key factor is the lack of practical, hands-on experience. While a solid theoretical foundation is crucial, employers increasingly seek candidates with articulate wet lab skills and real-world technical problem-solving abilities. Nowadays after post graduation, very few remains in core research. Many shift to alternate fields like IT, EHS, data science, medical coding, or scientific publishing. Reason? 🔹 The biotech industry requires specific skills that fresh graduates often lack. Dual degrees, like combining a BTech with an MTech, can offer broad academic knowledge but fall short in practical, wet lab experience. MTech students might excel theoretically but struggle with hands-on lab work, leaving them unprepared for industry demands. 🔹 Often, academic programs focus on exam-oriented teaching, neglecting practical skills and industrial problem-solving. This can lead to a lack of engagement and understanding of essential biotech techniques. 🔹 I feel there’s a significant gap between academic research and industry needs. Academia focuses on publications, while industries prioritize product development and market readiness. 🔹 More theoritical grasp of fundamental sciences can impair a student’s ability to tackle complex biotech challenges effectively. 🔹 Many universities and organizations lack advanced research facilities, hindering students' engagement in hands-on research and scientific exploration. 🔸 Additional Factors to Consider: ◾ Industry Experience: Internships and project work are invaluable for gaining practical insights. (most imp.) ◾Networking: Building connections with professionals in the field can open doors to opportunities. ◾Specialization: Tailoring your skills and knowledge to specific areas within biotechnology can make you a more attractive candidate. Bridging these gaps is key to improving career prospects in Biotech. Follow ⚜ Surya Sekhar Pal ⚜ for more! Ph.D. Dilemma: Postdoc or Job market? What about the third option?? As Ph.D. candidates near the end of their thesis journey, scholars often face a crucial decision: pursue a postdoc or enter the job market? While both paths have their merits, there’s a lesser-known third option that offers unique benefits: an industrial postdoc. Why consider an industrial postdoc? Valuable work experience: Gain real-world experience, operate state-of-the-art equipment, and establish industry contacts. Insight into industrial research: Learn the terminology and processes not covered in academic settings. Better work-life balance and pay: Enjoy regular daytime schedules and competitive salaries, including stock purchase plans and employee discounts. Career flexibility: Whether you’re leaning towards academia or industry, an industrial postdoc holds the same value as an academic one and opens doors in both sectors. High-tech companies use industrial postdocs for exploratory research and as a recruitment tool, providing a glimpse into the world of industrial research. The education systems in most of the developed countries are increasingly collaborating with industries, making this experience highly valuable. If you’re nearing the end of your Ph.D. and pondering your next steps, consider an industrial postdoc. It might just be the perfect blend of academia and industry you’re looking for! 💼🔬 PS- Our expert mentors at NaukriNavigator can empower you through targeted assessments, exploration of options, and strategic planning, aligning decisions with your unique goals equipping you with tools for success and fulfilment.
