As T&D World notes, it's important that we resiliently provide #energyforwhatmattersmost to the greater Houston area: "The Greater Houston area is at risk of extreme weather events and continues to experience rapid population growth as well as strong economic expansion.  While the Greater Houston area incorporates about 2% of the geographic area of Texas, CenterPoint Energy's metered customers account for approximately 25% of the total electric load in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas region." https://lnkd.in/gWFptmNP

Significant progress has already been made towards transforming the electricity system with a huge expansion in #cleanenergy. However, a rapid increase in the volume of projects wanting to plug in to the transmission network has led to a massively oversubscribed #gridconnections pipeline.  We’re committed to tackling this and connecting clean energy as quickly as possible. We’re already taking action alongside National Grid ESO, transmission owners, distribution network operators, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and Ofgem to deliver the change that’s needed, and have now responded to the ESO’s latest consultation on proposals aimed at further reform. AEMO’s 2024 Integrated System Plan (ISP) is a decent read for those in the electricity industry. It shows a continued growth path for energy storage, including grid-scale BESS and also through consumer energy resources (i.e. home batteries and V2G), with support from gas as a back-up fuel source. I agree with AEMO around the Step Change scenario being the best and least cost pathway resulting in material emission reductions by 2050. With HPC Data Centers coming online to support Generative AI adoption at the enterprise business level, we are seeing massive demand growth in the PJM network. We need these HPC and "hybrid" Mining + AI Compute data centers to support grid reliability now more than ever. Similar to battery storage, Mining and GPU loads are highly automated and able to respond to grid needs in seconds! We consider these customers to be the ultimate Virtual Power Plant and are a great benefit to the grid when participating in Demand Response.

$10.2 billion in savings!    Since its launch in 2014, Southwest Power Pool’s (SPP) Integrated Marketplace has generated more than $10 billion in savings. In 2023 alone, the service provided members $2.25 billion in annual savings. In 2021, SPP launched the Western Energy Imbalance Services (WEIS) market, a real-time balancing market in the Western Interconnection. Day two of my new role in National Grid Electricity Transmission included the daunting deadline for consultation responses (yes - 'responses' plural!) to National Grid ESO's proposals for #ConnectionReform. The Target Model Option 4 ('TMO4') solution seeks to consider customer readiness much more strongly as a route to move projects through a gated connection process. Applying this approach to both new and existing applicants is vital, as we aspire to provide connections to the system **almost** as quickly as Ipswich Town FC getting promoted from League One to the Premier League! #UppaTowen Whilst developer readiness is important, it is vital that our reformed connection arrangements consider the wider strategic need to connect projects as well. The level of activity and investment by companies like ours to develop and build the electricity system - which is funded by all of us - is significant and needs to have a bigger picture in mind.
