I just came across this great (insightful / interesting) 2024 Luxury report by InternetRetailing and RetailX which emphasizes why luxury is such a unique industry. The Global Luxury goods market is incredibly resilient and despite periods of economic recessions, it is a market that always bounces back. It was worth $354.81bn in 2023, up from $312.63bn in 2022, with increasing revenues per user globally. In 2022 alone, this innovative and creative industry even surpassed its 2019 pre-pandemic revenues. At the core of this growth, categories like Fashion and Leather Goods continue to prevail, but it is interesting to note a shift in core consumers’ groups. Millennials make up the largest single group of shoppers for luxury, accounting for 26%. Surprisingly, younger Gen Z shoppers are the second largest group of luxury spenders, already accounting for 21%. The majority of luxury shoppers are located in China and India, but markets like MENA show exciting potential. Interestingly, although Europe accounts for a smaller share of the global luxury market, in 2023 its growth restored its position as one of the strongest luxury markets in the world, driven by travel retail. Consumer behavior in this industry is also showing some interesting shifts towards increasingly attractive second-hand luxury marketplaces, as well as a focus on sustainability practices that encourages consumers to move away from fast fashion brands. For brands, on the other side, this has led to growing commitments towards more ethical practices and supply chains. Finally, although this industry is still predominantly driven by physical retail, it is interesting to note the importance of mobile shopping as a core digital commerce channel, especially in China. Social channels still remain an important avenue to connect luxury consumers and brands as they bridge the gap between reality and the fantasy of a higher social status. The Luxury market is best known to constantly innovate to cater to new generations and to a growing tech-savvy consumer base. Launching experiences on the Metaverse; leveraging Blockchain technologies for goods’ authentication; maximizing the potential of AI to deliver hyper-personalized experiences and customer service are all common practices amongst the largest luxury brands globally. https://lnkd.in/epkQUrMT
