As pharmacy spending continues to trend near double digits and becomes a larger portion of overall #healthcarecosts, what can payers/employers do to contain costs without reducing quality or benefits? --- The foundation to any change is to first get the data to see where you currently stand. How can you measure improvement if you don't know where you started? You NEED that data from your PBM/TPA. It's your data and it's vital to holding everyone accountable. Once you have access to the data, you can feed it into Excel, or if you want prettier visuals, a tool like PowerBI or Tableau. There you can aggregate the data into some descriptive analytics (top cost/volume drugs, generic dispensing rate, specialty drug classes, etc.). Now you have the foundation to make decisions. --- I've done this manually in the past with PowerBI. I've also used products like the Milliman MyRxConsultant platform to do all the data management and basic reports for me. The exact method isn't as important as getting the descriptive analytics to make decisions. Even better is having benchmarks to compare to across your industry. --- This is post 1 of 3 this week on managing #pharmacy trends.
