This hits hard, as loggers in Western MD once again are told to clean up the logs on deck and halt cutting. The ripple effect of this shutdown will be similar to what the region felt when the Luke paper mill shut down several years ago. The production from AWP will be hard to absorb with the current industry infrastructure- meaning the logging force and private landowners will take another huge blow with many completely dependent upon the markets provided by AWP facilities. The forestry sector needs help and fast. We have an abundant resource that needs management. There is discouragement, fear and desperation throughout the industry. Policies and mindsets must be challenged that are stifling expansion, growth and new market development. Markets are the answer, but time is of the essence. #marylandforests #forestsforever #mountainmaryland #logging #forestry #sawmilling https://lnkd.in/eHUbTM5R

Thanks to David Collett for the time he afforded me today on my visit to one of his depots in Halifax. Which happens to be my home town !! It was great for me to hear of the skill and expertise that is involved moving abnormal loads around the country. Also the issues and challenges which were really brought to life. This specialised sector is vital to UK PLC. We collectively convened a working group early last year after operators reported inconsistencies and challenges with abnormal loads enforcement. The group consists of the Heavy Transport Association, National Highways, Backhouse Jones Solicitors, National Caravan Council, Park Dean Resorts, Construction & Plant Association, National Farmers Union, Hiab, Ainscough Crane Hire, along with ourselves and other key operators within the industry. Hauliers have told us that inconsistency of enforcement increases bureaucracy and costs, and the knock-on effect can be felt in the wider economy, with projects getting delayed and potentially postponed. As a result, we have established strong relationships with the police, including senior officers from the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC), along with a number of forces. We are all clear that safety is paramount on our roads, and our collective aim is to ensure that firms have the clarity and certainty they need to be able to move their customers’ goods efficiently and without additional bureaucracy. We recognise that the forces have a difficult job to do, and we know that abnormal loads are a complex field requiring specialist knowledge, experience, and consideration. Inconsistency can make it difficult for hauliers and their customers to find real-time, realistic solutions. The NPCC is working with the industry on a project to update the national guidance to reinforce their efforts to increase knowledge of the rules and improve cross-force consistency. We will continue to work together to share ideas, understand concerns, and explore opportunities to benefit policing and operators. Working together with other stakeholders has given this campaign different perspectives, inputs, and impetus than if any of us had tried to tackle this alone. It shows the value of collaboration and engagement as we strive to make sure operators have the confidence and clarity they need. In the meantime, we’re conducting an economic impact assessment so that we can articulate the cumulative effect these issues are having on our industry and beyond. We will continue to update on our progress. Welcome to the working group David and team. Comments always welcome

A recent nationwide study carried out by the Center for Urban Economic Development at the University of Illinois Chicago has revealed that a large percentage of workers have been forced to take unpaid time off work due to illness or injury. The study found that 69% of the surveyed workers had to stay at home to recover, with 34% of them doing so three or more times. These statistics highlight the health challenges and financial burdens that many workers face when dealing with health and safety issues at work. The pressure to work too hard and too quickly can lead to unnecessary injuries.
An important new survey by the University of Illinois Chicago’s Center for Urban Economic Development reveals the human consequences when companies sacrifice worker safety and protection at the altar of corporate speed and efficiency. https://lnkd.in/e6H26vnK

Southeastern states are dedicated to creating warehouse and manufacturing opportunities in and around their major metros, and Hampton Roads is no exception. The Port of Virginia’s continued growth and significant infrastructure projects have served as one of the primary drivers for the increased industrial demand. The substantial industrial market growth in recent years has mirrored the metro area’s explosive population growth, and the current labor force is over 1 million strong. Click the link below to read more about the C&W’s Southeast Industrial Labor Report including Thalhimer’s coverage of the Hampton Roads region.

There is no publicly available list of Victorian Union Officials that hold OHS Right of Entry (ARREO) Permits available. The listing of ARREO Permit holders is maintained by the Magistrates Court but it is not publicly displayed. Victoria is markedly different to other jurisdictions in that the Fair Work Commission maintains a database of all union officials' Federal Entry Permits and WHS Entry Permits. A Union official cannot exercise an OHS Right of Entry if they do not hold a Federal Entry Permit. For those in the construction industry key in Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union-Construction and General Division, Victoria-Tasmania Divisional Branch into the search to identify which CFMEU Vic Officials have a Federal Entry Permit. If the Official does not hold a Federal Permit that cannot enter the workplace for industrial relations or safety reasons. https://lnkd.in/gvSeDvAi
