The African proverb "The stranger sees only what he knows" encapsulates a profound truth about human perception, particularly in the context of encountering unfamiliar cultures. This proverb suggests that when individuals are confronted with something new or foreign, they tend to filter their perceptions through the lens of what is already familiar to them. In essence, people have a tendency to notice and focus on aspects of the unfamiliar that align with their existing knowledge and experiences, while overlooking or dismissing elements that diverge from their preconceived notions. This phenomenon has significant implications for intercultural understanding and communication. When individuals from one culture interact with or observe another culture, they often gravitate towards aspects that resonate with their own cultural background. For instance, in the example provided, someone living in Iran may instinctively be drawn to billboards written in the Latin alphabet, even if the language is unfamiliar, simply because the script is recognizable and provides a sense of comfort or familiarity. However, this selective perception can hinder genuine engagement and learning. By focusing solely on the familiar aspects of a culture, individuals miss out on valuable opportunities to expand their understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity. The most meaningful insights often lie in the aspects of a culture that are the most unfamiliar or different from one's own. These unfamiliar elements challenge individuals to question their assumptions, broaden their perspectives, and cultivate empathy towards people whose experiences and worldviews differ from their own. In essence, the proverb serves as a reminder to approach encounters with unfamiliar cultures with an open mind and a willingness to embrace the unfamiliar. By transcending the limitations of what we already know, we can unlock a wealth of knowledge and insight that can enrich our lives and deepen our connections with others in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world. #culturalperception #crossculturalunderstanding

I see a lot of trainings and workshops focused on cultural competency. They may not use those exact words, but the gist is: “Take the course so you can get: 1. The checklist of what to do/not do/say/not say, 2. A list of books or resources to read so you finally ‘understand’ what it’s like to be ____, and 3. One person’s perspective of what it’s like to be that identity (usually deficit and limitations focused).” While that’s…one way…another might be to completely shift the orientation of the person seeking that information. When we center cultural humility, we realize we will never know all there is to know about another culture or identity. We can never fully know what it’s like to embody that identity, even if parts of our own identity are marginalized. Our liberation is fully tied up in one another’s. That doesn’t mean we need to fully understand another’s experience in order to be in solidarity with them, or even just believe them. In the academic sector, validating the mother tongue improves #academicsuccess across all subject areas, #truancy rates, and #graduation rates. And in 49 states, validating English and at least one other language can qualify a student for the Seal of #Biliteracy (www.sealofbiliteracy.org). Anyone can certify their language ability with Language Testing International. #languagematters #multilingualism

Etics - universality of cultural norms… Emics - culture specific mores and beliefs… Ethnocentrism - judging other cultures from the viewpoint of one’s cultural norms considering the latter being superior (Zunker, 2016). Multiculturally competent counselor continuously explores and acknowledges one’s etics, emics and ethnocentrism 😇🙏🏻
