I often attend online sessions and in-person meetings that are held under 'the Chatham House Rule'. But so often this rule is misunderstood. The rule says: "When a meeting, or part thereof, is held under the Chatham House Rule, participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed." It is often thought that the rule is like 'Fight Club' in that whatever is discussed is not disclosed outside the meeting. This is incorrect. The mistaken belief that the Chatham House Rule guarantees confidentiality can expose participants who disclose sensitive or privileged information to significant commercial and legal risks. The Rule does not offer any legal protection over the content of discussions. It is important to understand the limitations of the rule and ensure that anything disclosed will not be an issue if it is put in the public domain. This not only mitigates legal risks but also ensures that commercially valuable ideas and proprietary information are adequately protected. Most of all, meeting hosts should not just say 'the Chatham House Rule' and expect everyone to be on the same page. Hosts need to understand the rule themselves and explain the rule properly, or better still, explain the actual expectations of confidentiality. There is still no legal guarantee of confidentiality however. #risk #confidentiality #NDA

🚨 NumFOCUS Code of Conduct Working Group Nominations Now Open! 🚨 The NumFOCUS Board of Directors approved the new NumFOCUS Code of Conduct on Sept. 4, 2024, as part of our commitment to creating an inclusive and respectful environment. The new Code of Conduct will go into effect in January 2025. These updates re-emphasize respect for all forms of identity, outline clearer definitions of unacceptable behavior, and introduce a new structure for handling violations. To support this update, we’re creating a Code of Conduct Working Group and are looking for nominees who want to help oversee this policy. The WG's role is to review, investigate, respond to, and advise on potential conduct violations under the new CoC. On request, the WG may also provide guidance to projects and communities in the NumFOCUS ecosystem. NumFOCUS event organizers will continue to form Code of Conduct Event Response Teams to receive reports and determine responses. Additionally, they may seek advice from the WG on the best approach to handling some reports. 🗓️ The deadline to submit your nominations is Sunday, October 19th, 2024, 11:59 pm AoE 🗓️ This is your chance to be part of shaping a safer, more equitable community for all. Learn more and nominate yourself or others at https://hubs.la/Q02QC1wS0.

Setting out how we will drive the improvements needed to re-build trust in our regulation On 3 October we set out how we will drive the improvements needs to re-build trust in our organisation, including making immediate changes to support our response to the recommendations in the interim report from Dr Penny Dash. The changes will help us to deliver: ▪️ a clear and transparent programme of assessment and ratings ▪️ quicker and more effective registration and assessments of providers ▪️ simpler and clearer reports. It is vital that we work with providers, the public and wider stakeholders when making decisions about changes and we will use these regular bulletins to share opportunities to engage with us.
