Last week I proposed 3 strategies to help cloud software vendors capitalize on the rise in #AI investments. And here’s a great example of how cloud-based commerce platform, Shopify, is putting these strategies to practice: 1️⃣ Investing in AI Development: Last month #Shopify increased access to it’s AI-powered tools, including its chatbot assistant, Sidekick, and its image-generation feature. 2️⃣ Clearly Communicating ROI: The company has increased its marketing spend with President Harley Finkelstein estimating these expenditures to pay off within the next 16 months. 3️⃣ Forming Strategic Partnerships: Retail giant Target recently tapped Shopify to build out its third-party marketplace. Keep these strategies in mind as Shopify's earnings are projected to grow by 33.8% for the current fiscal year. And stay tuned as I plan on highlighting how we’re putting these strategies to work at Brivo.

You know I’m pretty happy the Shopify ecosystem is maturing in its approach to customers….. have you noticed… no one is saying : “Best of Breed” anymore? That’s because more sophisticated retailers and brand operators know there is so much more to it than simply being the best. Thr self declared “best of breed”. I’d rather 20 apps than 50! Even though we’re seeing increased interest from enterprise brands replatforming to Shopify, not every entperise merchant wants to embrace the “go-to” tech stack. Which was a big take away from #ShopTalk this year. When I say the “go-to” tech stack, I mean the SaaS solutions and technology stack that has worked for the DTC and digitally native brands for the past 5-10 years. What Shopify is doing extremely well is bridging the gap, and finding middle ground between Microservices and Monolith. But not every SaaS product can go up market with Shopify to support true enterprise merchants… Of course, there are brands who want to scale back on tech debt, as well as embrace more out of the box features. Some who want to make massive shifts and completely embrace the ecosystem that was been so attractive. But there are others coming from very complex, custom, and/or headless environments, that have heavy integrations with enterprise systems. The most interesting part is how these enterprise brands want to leverage Shopify. And it’s not always “headless and composable”. They don’t want to just trade one complex architecture for another, but they also need sophisticated systems to support business needs. More often than not, they are attracted to Shopify because it allows them to focus on the core business systems that can be treated as “microservices” (in a way), without having to build/own every piece of the tech stack. They don’t want to simplify their tech stack, they want a sophisticated infrastructure that meets their business needs. They just don’t want/need to build it from the ground up anymore. That’s why we’re seeing far more enterprise SaaS companies in the Shopify ecosystem that weren’t there 2-3 years ago. #shopify #ecommerce #enterprise

A little while ago, I sat down to write an article to review the current landscape of composable commerce and headless technologies with the intention of disambiguating the myriad of confusing terms (headless, MACH, JAMstack, composable, etc) and reframing the narrative to look at the appropriate use cases and opportunities this approach offers, beyond the usual trope of enhanced performance and that React is great for development (although I have to agree!). While performance is undeniably a critical factor, I was dissatisfied with the prevailing narrative as just talking about performance felt a bit shallow. The advantages of a full-stack, API-first architecture goes far, far beyond this, and many of the opportunities might only be apparent to developers or technical teams already engrossed with working in these environments. The timing also seemed particularly relevant in the wake of several significant improvements to the Shopify platform in recent of years (Store 2.0 and Markets), which to some degree invalidated many historical use cases for headless in the context of Shopify, with the resulting development of a counter-narrative on complexity and cost of headless (a valid but arguably narrow perspective), and subsequent migrations from composable architectures back to monolithic ones that we’re starting to see today. Before long this article snowballed into a full-blown ebook, where I have tried to share my thoughts on the topic and lay out what I see as the major opportunities, trade-offs, risks and key considerations for my fellow CTOs and other senior tech leaders that are considering going the composable route. Whether you’re undergoing digital transformation and trying to decide, or already on headless and looking to cut costs or explore new opportunities, I think there is something for everyone, even if headless isn't (spoiler alert: it's not).
