CR Reynolds Limited was 'centre stage' at the MKM Stadium last week to take part in the STEM 2024 secondary school event. Throughout the day, we engaged with groups of year 9 students from schools across Hull and the East Riding. We delivered insights into the incredible career opportunities available in our industry and put the students civil engineering and teamwork skills to the test! We are proud to be a partner of this fantastic annual careers event as part of our company's ongoing commitment to encouraging and developing the civil engineers of the future. #inspiringthenextgeneration, #STEMcareers

Meet Our Intern! 🌟 Jeremy, a first-generation college student, chose Civil Engineering due to the high demand for civil engineers. He is aware of their critical role in shaping and maintaining communities and sees the field as an opportunity for personal and community growth. Here's Jeremey's advice for aspiring Civil Engineers: "My advice to someone who is considering a career in civil engineering would be that you do not have to be a genius; all you have to do is put in the time and the effort. Anything with a greater return will require greater effort."

Insights and news (is it?) from Civil Edge: the UK's civil engineering sector is grappling with a severe talent shortage, driven by emerging projects such as the Lower Thames Crossing, the Stonehenge Tunnel, in addition to ongoing developments like HS2. This escalating demand for skilled labour is expected to peak in 2026, risking project delays and heightened competition for skilled workers. Take Construction - according to the Construction Skills Network, by 2027, the construction sector will need approximately 225,000 new workers to keep pace with ongoing and future projects. When talking about the cause and solutions, a significant segment of the industry believes that a lack of technological and digital skills contributes to the talent shortage, highlighting the need for modern skill sets in traditional fields. My Friday shout-out to industry companies BAM UK & Ireland John Sisk & Son Ltd and academic partners at Aston University Thomas Telford UTC School of Surveying & Construction Innovation TU Dublin in the UK and Ireland that work with us on supporting apprenticeships and training to engineering students, as well as initiatives to improve the perception of the construction industry and the visibility of construction careers, particularly among young people and women. I'm absolutely delighted at the announcement this week of a new partnership between #BuckinghamshireHighways and Buckinghamshire College Group, where we'll be a #CornerstoneEmployer supporting the College’s new T Level in Civil Engineering, set to launch in September 2025. This prestigious partnership brings the expertise and resources of AtkinsRéalis, Balfour Beatty Living Places, and Buckinghamshire Council directly to the College’s students, offering invaluable industry insight and practical experience that will equip them to excel in civil engineering careers and driving positive social impact throughout the region. As a Cornerstone Employer, we will play a key role on Buckinghamshire College Group’s employer board, helping to shape the T Level Civil Engineering curriculum to meet industry standards and ensure students gain the practical skills needed for a successful career. Students will have opportunities to learn directly from #AtkinsRéalis through masterclasses, guest lectures, and student placements, bridging classroom knowledge with real-world engineering challenges. Really proud to see this come to fruition after initial discussions earlier in the year - special thanks to Harriet Smith for making it happen. https://lnkd.in/e838M3cU

I’m happy to share that I’ve obtained a new certification: Structural and Civil Engineering Work Experience with AJP from Springpod! The 7 hour virtual programme has taken me through some of the key principles of Civil Engineering and what is expected and required of you in the industry. From learning about how Civil Engineers manage flood risk to understanding how they work with geotechnical engineers, it has been thoroughly enjoyable and an enlightening experience. One part of the experience that really stood out to me was the design of the substructures of buildings and the use of drones and other 3D modelling software to fully understand the limitations and constraints of the project, before construction has even started. The ability to model the morphology and lithology of the ground before moving any amount of sediment is truly amazing and a marker to indicate how the development of technology allows us to push the boundaries of development. In contrast to this, the social and political constraints also took my interest, where limited vibration can be used in residential areas due to structural and ethical considerations. It was interesting to also note the maps used and the complications this can bring, where thick red border lines used on maps brings elements of uncertainty as this may correspond to a 1 metre thick line on site. Completing this work experience has only furthered backed up my passion to pursue a career in Civil Engineering and has motivated me to continue to apply for degree apprenticeships in this sector.

Another day to remind Civil Engineering Technologists that we are no longer valued in this country. How comes that Public Service Commission doesn't recognize the existence of Technologists in this country? We have Graduates in diplomas and Higher National diplomas how do you set minimum requirements for internship as Bachelor's Degree? Don't you recognize existence of TVET institutions? PSC is not a private sector. Stop this discrimination. #Publicservicecomission #EngineeringTechnologists.

MEET THE INTERNS! Name: Liath Lenihan Role: Student Civil/Structural Engineer Department: Civil/Structural Engineering College Degree: Civil Engineering in Munster Technological University (Kerry Campus) Hobbies: Football and Running Favourite project and why? My favourite project I have been involved in so far is a large three phase housing development in Limerick, which is currently still in the design stage. I really enjoy working on this project as you get to see many different aspects of the work involved. Working with a skilled group of structural engineers, I have aided in designing some of the structural elements for this housing development. I have enjoyed this project a lot as I have been involved in it since the beginning so I’m seeing it move through the different design stages. This project allowed me to become familiar with new calculation software. Experience gained so far: During my work experience so far in MWP, I have learned how to put information learned in college into real life projects while also learning new information from the engineers here in MWP. I have learned how to use new software such as Tekla Tedds that I otherwise mightn’t have seen till after finishing my degree. I have learned how to complete new tasks and calculations that I wouldn’t have done previously, this is with the help of the team of engineers. Most challenging and rewarding aspect of your role: The most challenging aspect of my role at MWP is adjusting from college to my first professional role in engineering. When beginning placement there is a big learning curve and lots of new information to digest. Once you begin projects and put the information to use, it gives a rewarding feeling of accomplishment for completing new tasks. Aims for the next few years: My aim for the next few years is to finish my degree in Civil Engineering in MTU. After that I would like to carry on my studies in a master’s programme. My time here on placement is helping me decide on what area I would like to complete my master’s programme in. The knowledge I have gained during this internship will greatly help me finish my studies! #mwp #engineering #interns #consultancy
