As we celebrate Juneteenth, we recognize the ongoing fight for freedom, equality, and the dismantling of systemic oppression. This day is not just a commemoration of emancipation, but a reminder of the work still needed to achieve true equity, including the ongoing fight for environmental justice and children's health. Racial inequality has deep connections to environmental disparities and health outcomes. Many Black and Brown communities in the U.S. face higher exposure to pollution and toxicants and lack access to the health resources enjoyed by their Whiter counterparts. These injustices affect our children's health, contributing to long-term health disparities and continuing the cycle of injustice. Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder to address these disparities. All kids should be able to live, learn, and play in places and within an economy and society that help them thrive, not make them sick. Working together, we can build a healthier, more equitable future for all children. Together, we can build systems that enable all children to share in abundance and thrive. Join us in acknowledging the historical injustices and working towards a future of environmental and health equity for all. Let's stand united in our call for a Just Transition—moving from systems of extraction and exploitation to one of regeneration and cooperation. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union soldiers arrived in Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation - over 2 years after it was passed. Though emancipation was law, many enslavers refused to accept this, choosing to withhold information, forcibly preventing people from access to their basic human rights. This delay reminds us that truth is not enough – access is key. In the spirit of perseverance that we celebrate today, I’d like to highlight an organization from my home state and a few from the one I currently call "home" that work to empower underrepresented communities by providing access to resources that create equitable opportunities: Louisiana: @NorthshoreCF provides scholarships, elevates local nonprofits, and bridges community needs with donor interests in the Northshore region. Washington State: @Tabor100 supports networking and education efforts for minorities, women, and African-American owned businesses. @ElevateWA offers mentorship programs, @UW_EarthLab funds environmental justice projects, @WA_Opportunityscholars supports STEM students, and @WSU's Team Mentoring nurtures diverse STEM talent.

This World Children's Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to securing the rights of every child globally. When we invest in children and provide them access to healthcare, education, protection and opportunities to develop to their full potential, we are investing in a brighter future for all. However, millions of children are still denied their basic rights. Conflict, violence, discrimination and poverty continue to rob children of their chance to thrive. On this day, I urge leaders, governments and civil society to take tangible actions to build a world where every child is safe, learned and empowered. A world where every child can equitably access their rights. The health of our society tomorrow depends on how we treat our children today. We all have a role to play in driving progress for children's rights. Together we can build a world 'For every child, every right.'

#Juneteenth commemorates the anniversary of June 19, 1865 – when the news of freedom arrived in Texas and reached the last remaining enslaved individuals.    Today is a day of celebration, marking the end of chattel slavery in the United States and the freedom of future generations. Champions will uncover the implicit and explicit ways race has impacted their lived experiences. They'll practice dialogue across diverse aspects of identity. And they'll conspire with others to spur change towards racial co-liberation." "Champions for Change commit to a nine-month-long intensive leadership development program. Champions meet every two to three weeks in seven-hour sessions. Most sessions will take place in-person in Washtenaw County, however the program is open to leaders from across SE Michigan. Each session emphasizes building relationships, sharing stories, practicing deep listening, and skill-building. (We also make time to play and share meals together!)."
