❌The Number 1 Bedtime Mistake…!!!! ❌😵 As a Paediatric Sleep Expert, I would say that the number one mistake parents make at their child’s bedtime is inconsistency. Establishing a consistent bedtime routine is crucial for promoting healthy sleep habits in children. Many parents tend to overlook the importance of a regular sleep schedule and often allow their child to stay up late or have varying bedtimes on different days. Children thrive on routine and predictability, and having a consistent bedtime routine helps signal to their bodies that it’s time to wind down and prepare for sleep. When parents are inconsistent with bedtime, it can disrupt their child’s natural sleep-wake cycle, leading to difficulties falling asleep and staying asleep. To avoid this mistake, it is essential to establish a consistent bedtime routine that includes activities such as a warm bath, reading a book, or listening to calming music. Set a specific bedtime that allows for an adequate amount of sleep based on your child’s age and stick to it as much as possible, even on weekends or during vacations. Consistency also extends to the sleep environment. Ensure that your child’s bedroom is conducive to sleep, with a comfortable mattress, 10/10 darkness , appropriate room temperature 21 - 24 degrees and minimal distractions. Consistently following these practices will help your child develop healthy sleep patterns and improve their overall sleep quality. Baby and child sleep consultant and educator. Helping sleep-deprived parents achieve age-appropriate sleep for their little ones 💤 Offering accredited child sleep consultant training courses🎓
Sleep promotes sleep. Overtired babies and children are far more difficult to get to sleep and to maintain sleep. Daytime naps are super important for children under 4 years old. Scientific research has found that children have lulls in their body clocks when they fall asleep more easily. This is why I always promote natural nap windows rather than sleepy cues. Sleepy cues are perfect for babies under 3 months. After this time, they can quite often mean we have missed the optimum sleep window. The witching hour we see, usually between 4 pm-8 pm, is mostly due to babies or children being overtired. If you would like more information on appropriate sleep for your little one, comment below or DM me.

Extremely excited to be working on my own personalized approach to helping high-performing moms and their babies achiever better and more restful sleep. First step: Improving their sleep hygiene - which includes optimizing their sleep environment. My most recent blog post goes over 5 simple, actionable changes you can make to your sleep environment that helps you actually sleep better (decluttering, soft lighting, cool temperatures, soothing sounds, and investing in comfort). "Pregnancy pillows, herbal teas, supplements, meditation apps, breathing exercises, sleep training methods, absolutely-no-sleep-training philosophies… When did something as natural as sleep become so complicated? And while there are probably A LOT of things you could eventually change to make sleep a dream come true (pun intended), there’s a really simple place to begin: your (and your baby’s) sleep environment."

Why prioritizing healthy sleep habits for toddlers matters: As parents, we understand the importance of good behavior and the constant concern for our children's well-being. One critical aspect that significantly impacts both is sleep quality. Toddlers, with their boundless energy and curiosity, often struggle with establishing healthy sleep routines, leading to frustrations and fears for parents. How to tackle sleep struggles while aiming for good behavior and easing parental fears: 1. Consistent Bedtime Routine: Establishing a calming bedtime routine signals to toddlers that it's time to wind down, preparing them for a restful sleep. 2. Regular Sleep Schedule: Consistency in bedtime and wake-up times helps regulate toddlers' internal clocks, promoting better sleep patterns. 3. Comfortable Sleep Environment: Creating a conducive sleep environment involves keeping the room dark, quiet, and at a comfortable temperature. 4. Limit Screen Time Before Bed: Avoiding screens before bedtime helps mitigate the disruption of melatonin production, aiding in easier sleep onset. 5. Encourage Physical Activity: Engaging toddlers in daytime physical activity helps them expend energy, contributing to better sleep quality. 6. Monitor Nap Times: Ensuring that daytime naps don't interfere with nighttime sleep by avoiding long naps close to bedtime. 7. Address Sleep Associations: Gradually introducing alternative soothing methods helps toddlers learn to fall asleep independently. 8. Seek Professional Help if Necessary: Consulting with pediatricians or sleep specialists can offer personalized advice and interventions for persistent sleep struggles. By prioritizing healthy sleep habits, we can support our toddlers development, foster good behavior, and alleviate parental fears about their well-being. Let's empower each other to create nurturing environments conducive to sound sleep and happy families. #ParentingTips #HealthySleepHabits #ChildDevelopment #WellBeing #ToddlerLife #SleepStruggles #GoodBehavior #ParentingAdvice #FamilyWellness #SleepSolutions #HealthySleepHabits #ChildDevelopment #WellBeing 🌙💤

It’s helpful to understand what sleep foundations are and how they can be used to optimise your little one’s sleep. As a Nursery Nurse, Maternity Nurse and Sleep specialist with many years of experience working with little ones and their families I understand how hard it can be for parents when the family is struggling with sleep but I hope these tips help to promote better sleep in your home. Sleep Foundations: what are they and how do they promote sleep? 🌞Getting that day light exposure helps to synchronize circadian rhythms and promotes sleepiness at bedtime. 🤗Connection and feeling safe. Before your little one can fall sleep they need to feel secure and safe. Being responsive to your little one's needs and feeling confident in their sleep space. Focusing on attachment and connection, the easier sleep typically becomes. 🍼Nutrition plays a huge role in how babies and toddlers sleep. Some foods before bed can increase a child's blood sugar which can increase their stress levels. This hinders the production of the sleepy hormone, melatonin which can disrupt their sleep patterns. The timing of meals can also affect your baby's sleep. 🛌Maintaining a consistent and calming bedtime routine is a ritual that signals sleep is coming. 💡Creating the right environment can help to optimise sleep. Ideally in a room that is quiet, dark and cool. 😳Although every baby is different, a guide on age appropriate wake windows can help to find the balance between tired enough to fall asleep but not overly tired. I hope you found this helpful? 👉Comment below if you have a question about any of the sleep foundations.💖🙏 #responsiveparenting #newmumsupport #babysleeptips #babysleepadvice #gentlebabysleephelp
