This just in - Electronic Arts has announced the closure of Ridgeline Games, the studio working on a new single-player Battlefield campaign. As reported by IGN, the project is reportedly set to continue with "some" employees from Ridgeline set to join Ripple Effect – another Battlefield studio working on a different experience within the franchise. This is according to an internal note seen by IGN, which suggested Criterion producer Danny Isaac and studio head of creative Darren White will take over the project following the departure of Ridgeline's former head and founder Marcus Lehto yesterday. This would not go well on SO many levels it's difficult to focus on just one. But first and foremost, the central premise of #videogame publishing is to get the OTHER guy to hold the bag so that when the game explodes at speed, you are clear of the flames. EA is facing a sheer cliff in cost and main platforms. I don't see a large console future. EA is here because of consoles. I don't know what they are without them. I don't think they do either. The time to do this would have been around 2002 or so. Today? 💿 A Retreat from Live Service Games? 💾 Recently we’ve had news that several major game developers and publishers are pulling back on plans for F2P live service games, either by outright cancellations or pivoting to premium: - September 2023: SEGA canceled F2P live service shooter Hyenas. - October 2023: The Walt Disney Company/Gameloft announced that planned F2P live service title Dreamlight Valley will be paid. - November 2023: Sony Interactive Entertainment’s planned 12 live service games by 2026 is cut to six and Remedy Entertainment Plc announced rebooting F2P live service title‘Project Vanguard’ to go paid. Building live operations requires game development infrastructure built to continuously iterate and improve the live game, by using feedback loops from player reactions back to the developer. The goal of live operations are player retention and maximizing LTV, to keep the potential addressable audience healthy. Pivoting a game development studio from paid games to F2P with a goal to build games for live operations means reworking the organization structure, staffing, cost of content, and risk profiles. These are all compounding factors that make it challenging to create the right environment. Let’s look at some examples of recent pivots that shed light on these challenges.
