Bright Spaces, for Bright minds and Bright Futures I supported East Coast Architects in the design of two exemplary schools—7 Fountains Primary School and Vele Secondary School—where innovative daylighting strategies and smart lighting controls have transformed energy use in classrooms. Both schools feature simple, well-placed light switches that encourage the use of natural daylight and drastically reduce the need for artificial lighting. The experience at 7 Fountains helped refine the approach at Vele, where energy bills were compared with those of a neighboring school, showing remarkable savings. Throughout 2024, we saw a rise of smart building materials requested in projects. Proponents of smart building materials envision a future in which materials like self-cleaning paint and self-healing concrete essentially help a building play a role in its own maintenance. More commonly used smart materials include light-reactive glass and other systems that conserve energy by responding to their environment. For example, the Williams Village East Residence Hall at the University of Colorado Boulder includes skylights that darken or lighten depending on the season and time of day. In addition, student rooms in Williams Village East have heating and cooling systems that automatically shut off when windows are opened. Vacancy sensors in the rooms turn off lights and adjust the temperature when students leave the room. Noisy school corridors? We can help reduce noise effectively with our acoustic solutions. School corridors facilitate connectivity, but they are usually only occupied for a few minutes as students move from classroom to classroom. They can become extremely busy spaces in short bursts and that often results in high levels of noise. As school corridors generally feature highly durable materials, so that surfaces do not become damaged easily and deal effectively with the wear and tear of regular use, they are prone to reverberation issues. Sound from students talking, footsteps, doors being opened and closed and many other sounds can become unbearably loud and even affect adjoining rooms. The most effective way to reduce reverberation is to introduce more sound absorbent materials into the corridors. And sound absorber panels, such as Hush Absorber 50, are ideal for reducing noise in corridors because they are a passive, fit and forget solution that can usually be placed in areas of the corridor where they will not become damaged easily. I am fascinated by the engineering behind The Shed—a building with a fully movable facade that remains remarkably energy efficient. 〰 Movable Shell: The Shed’s telescoping shell creates a versatile, temperature-controlled space for diverse programming. 〰Sustainability: The building features high-efficiency mechanical systems, energy-efficient lighting, and a stormwater management system to reduce environmental impact. 〰Technological Integration: Advanced building management and state-of-the-art audio-visual systems enhance energy efficiency and visitor experience.
