🦷 It's Oral Health Awareness Month and did you know oral health is vital for overall well-being? For individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI), maintaining oral health can be challenging. Jennifer Coker, PhD, MPH, FASIA at Craig is studying the impact of oral health post-SCI to improve quality of life. Join Phase Two of our study by completing a 15-30 minute survey online or via phone. Participants will be compensated for their time. Eligible if you've had an SCI for at least a year, are 18+, and speak English fluently. Learn more and take the survey: https://lnkd.in/gjnQ6Ngy #SCIResearch #OralHealthAwarenessMonth

New research published by Gregg et al. in Nature Medicine discusses the impact of diabetes-associated MLTCs (multiple long-term conditions) on years of life spent and lost. Health systems are challenged by the current burden of MLTCs because of the fragmented nature of many care systems and the need to coordinate diverse teams and specialties, as well as the increasing demands of polypharmacy and medication management, and behavioral and caregiver support. #diabetes #mltcs
In a study of 46 million adults, living with diabetes-related multiple long-term health conditions (MLTCS), particularly during young adulthood, led to extended periods of time with MLTCS, while also substantially reducing the years of life, according to a paper in Nature Medicine. Our recent study, part of the PhD trajectory of Cheima Amrouch within the H2020 project AFFIRMO, reports a high prevalence of potentially inappropriate prescribing among multimorbid, polymedicated older adults with atrial fibrillation. Additionally, we found a nuanced relationship between prescribing patterns, patient characteristics, and adverse health outcomes. These findings emphasize the importance of implementing tailored interventions to optimize medication management in this patient population. Surfactant is a miracle drug. Used in NICUs every day. It has saved countless newborns. Surfactant = surface active agent. It’s like soap. It lowers surface tension. We all make it, but the cells that make it in preterm infants are immature. When you give it you often see a fairly rapid decrease in oxygen requirement. It is a life saver. Check out this story.
The story of pulmonary surfactant is one of the most complete bench ➡️ bedside ➡️ major public health impact stories in medicine (though as a pulmonologist I may be biased 🙂). Remarkably, John Clements discovered both the cause and synthesized the treatment, which has saved tens of thousands of lives. He passed earlier this month, at 101. If you don't know the story of surfactant, Trip Gabriel's reporting is an amazing (and amazingly readable) introduction. https://lnkd.in/gQWkRpFi

Our September issue of 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 – 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 is now online! This month, our editorial explores a pivotal question: Is the field of 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 ready to move beyond classification based solely on clinical course? We discuss the potential shift towards a biologically driven continuum framework, viewing MS as a continuous disease process throughout a patient's life, rather than dividing patients into distinct categories based on their clinical course. Successfully adopting this new paradigm will require a united effort from researchers, clinicians, patients, regulatory agencies, and health systems. Are we prepared for this transformative change? The future of multiple sclerosis treatment hinges on our ability to embrace this change with both urgency and precision. "The doctoral thesis by Nicklas Ennab Vogel is about making stroke health care more efficient. The social costs of stroke diseases are large. Suffering a stroke often has far-reaching consequences for the individual patient as well as for the next of kin. The time from becoming ill to the correct treatment in the emergency phase can be life-changing."
