Do you find there's still grey area when it comes to green materials? In my research, I've discovered a textile flooring containing the same percentage of waste material as Bolon (70% for modular tiles), however this carpet collection will need replacement in 5-7 years being of a traditional pile construction. Bolon is warranted for twice the number of years (and known to continue performing beyond 15 years). A lot of products are labelled as "carbon neutral" but how do we feel about the purchase of offsets to achieve it? If companies like Bolon are achieving this across all products and production without offsets, shouldn't this be the benchmark? When a company produces and markets an environmental 'collection' and their other collections are being manufactured irresponsibly, shouldn't they be called out? When a builder finds an 'equivalent' product at a better price, but it doesn't compare in environmental standards, should the substitution be allowed? Perhaps the Green Building Council of Australia RPV (Responsible Product Value) is what will cut through. Bolon has achieved Green Tag Level A for many years but according to the GBCA, Level A is comparative to RPV 10 or above. "Good Practice" is assessed at 7 and "Best Practice" at 12. Today, we had the pleasure of hosting one of our valued customers from the Concrete Industry in New Zealand. They visited Melbourne to inspect our screw reclaimer operating at a concrete batching plant owned by a major Victorian concrete and quarry company. This unit is an impressive piece of technology, processing waste concrete from 35 trucks daily and transforming it into clean sand and aggregate, which is 100% recycled back into new concrete. The sustainable nature of this operation is truly remarkable, and it's a testament to the innovation driving our industry forward 🌱. Not only does the reclaimer handle solid waste, but the water used for washing is also fully recycled and reused in the batching process. This closed-loop system significantly reduces water consumption and enhances the plant's green credentials. In an era where sustainability is paramount, this kind of innovation is exactly what the industry needs to meet environmental standards and exceed them ♻️. The unit has been in operation for over three years and remains in mint condition. Consistently performing at a high level, it ensures that the plant operates efficiently and sustainably, setting a benchmark for others to follow. Witnessing firsthand the impact of such sustainable practices is always inspiring. It's not just about reducing waste; it's about transforming how we think about resource management in the concrete industry. This visit was a powerful reminder of the strides we are making towards a greener future and the role technology plays in this journey 🌏. The new Circular Economy Report for Western Bay of Plenty highlighted concrete and plastic as two problematic materials with regards to waste. Priority One Western Bay of Plenty's Circular Construction Collective is committed to reducing construction waste through diversion and repurposing initiatives. Our most recent meeting was focused on concrete which generates a huge amount of emissions to produce and is also problematic to dispose of. The Circular Construction Collective discussed collaborate efforts to support this challenge and potential initiatives to support a more sustainable construction industry for our region. We had a great representation of the concrete waste solutions at our meeting. We started with Steve from MixUP who presented on their eco-max concrete. They swap out certain materials which lowers the concrete carbon footprint. Klaudia Matyjas from Envirocon presented on Interbloc, a system capturing concrete excess and diverting it from landfill. The blocks remain in use and can be used repeatedly for different applications. Drew from Rock Stocks presented on their demo concrete that is being crushed and put back into the industry it came from. And lastly, A&J Demolition presented on their reuse and repurposing approach to demolition. Saving what they can and giving it another life. The Circular Construction Collective share their waste diversion initiatives and are focused on the future of building better for the environment. This group is connected to SBNs national build out waste in the construction sector programme of work. Together with industry and local councils we are committed to driving our region forward to a more circular economy. Kyowa Rockbags, as one of the environmentally friendly innovations in the construction industry, are made from materials that are completely eco-friendly(Recycled polyester). This choice of materials not only helps preserve natural resources but also reduces the negative impacts associated with the use of recycled polyester vs virgin polyester. If we look at the impacts of using Virgin polyester materials, 300 bottles of drinking water are needed to produce 2 tons rockbags. This process not only results in a reduction of 5.46 liters of crude oil, but also reduces 19.5kg of carbon dioxide as a result of producing filter units from recycled polyester compared to virgin polyester. Looking at larger quantities, the production of 4 tons rockbags requires 650 bottles of drinking water, which similarly results in a reduction of 11.83 liters of crude oil and the reduces 42.3 kg of carbon dioxide. Also, to produce 8 tons rockbags, 2400 bottles of drinking water should be used, which again leads to a reduction of 43.68 liters of crude oil and 156 kg of carbon dioxide is reduced. Given these statistics, it is clear that the use of virgin polyester has significant negative effects on the environment.
