The best agency founders I’ve worked with always had this 1 thing in common: It was always a give-and-take relationship. I’d always learn a lot from their work to help me with my current & future clients. They’d get hours of admin saved by hiring me (humble brag 💅🏼) It’s always been more difficult when the founder is less available and I have to do everything through another person, i.e. Head of Operations. That’s why, if you plan to hire a VA, but not work with them directly, hire an exceptional HoP first.

Opportunity

There's a perception among some marketing agency professionals that those working in-house aren't as talented. The reason for this is because they believe that the fact they aren't exposed to a broad range of industries is a detriment. This view is flawed. People who work in-house get exposed to so much stuff that you don't get at an agency. For example, if they work for an e-commerce company they get to see the inner workings of that business. They'll get to understand buying, warehousing and logistics. They learn about internal politics and the conversations that have to take place before a decision is made. They see how sales and customer service teams operate and understand how much good (or bad) customer service impacts sales. Having that additional context is a superpower as it gives them an understanding of how marketing can impact wider business decisions. This is why I love seeing CVs from those who have worked in-house when I'm hiring.

Pro-tip when hiring an agency: Bigger doesn’t always mean better. Focus on expertise and specialization. A smaller, specialized team can often deliver more personalized and focused attention than a large agency with a one-size-fits-all approach. And always ask to speak directly with the team who will be handling your account. Don’t get caught in the bait-and-switch.
